All this week the cast and crew of MMPR 2 has been at our facility filming some underwater work in a special tank. This particular scene, set in a submarine, features both Jason and Kimberly. MMPR 2 will feature all the current Rangers plus a few of the old ones (Kimberly and Jason among them), fighting side-by-side against the forces of evil. SCOOP #2 reported by Norma Sakimoto Angel Grove Productions held an open call for Race to the Volcano, an action feature. The producer is Johannsen Hoeggendorf, and the director is Tim Collins. Casting is by PBA Casting. The six week shoot began on October 3. They were looking for Males: Polynesian or Asian preferred, 18-35, olive-skinned, 5'8"-6'2", little or no body hair, volcano natives, good body definition, medium build, ethnic dancing a plus; Males, 18-25 martial artists, no visible tattoos; Males and Females, 10-12, any ethnic; Males and females,18-23, all types high school students, extras; Males and Females, all types, extras. NON UNION only. SCOOP #3 reported by Rusty Miller The guy who created such TV vehicles as the Batmobile, Fred Flintstone's car for the movie, the Beverly Hillbillies car, K.I.T.T. from "Knight Rider", and just about every major vehicle in the industry, is currently working on the "vehicles" on "Race To the Volcano". SCOOP #4 by KShedd8613@aol.com Apparently, my dad saw the Pink Power Ranger filming on some rocks in Tennessee. SCOOP #5 reported by Anonymous Shooting is currently in progress in the Bronson Caves in the Hollywood Hills. With clever lighting and pyrotechnics, the caves have been made to look like caverns in the interior of a volcano. The villain in the new feature is a creature named Diva Tox, a tall blue-haired woman. Among her sidekicks are two identical-looking short aliens, and a tiny alien "baby" being played by a puppet, which the crew members had fun using as a ball to play catch with between takes. The plot apparently centers around a volcanic island inhabited by a prehistoric tribe called the Malachians (not so sure about the spelling), Polynesian-types with body tattoos, long hair, and weird masks. Diva Tox, for some reason, needs to take over the volcano; The Power Rangers try to stop her, but at one point the Rangers are defeated and Jason is captured. Steve Cardenas was on the set, but not playing Rocky; he is a stunt double for one of the villains. This doesn't necessarily mean that he is not playing Rocky in the movie. The scene shot yesterday (10/16) involved Diva Tox and her minions in the cave, where Jason/Austin St. John is chained to one of the cave walls. Using her powers, Tox convinces the Malachians that she is a god, and they fall under her sway, at which point the Malachians carry in one of their own captives: Kimberly. Amy Jo Johnson made a point of reminding the actors who were playing the Malachians who were carrying her to keep her safely away from the pyrotechnic effects, because she'd had had a traumatic experience with pyrotechnics early in her Power Ranger career (in the episode where Kimberly and Billy switched minds, an FX accident set her and David Yost on fire). The new characters are apparently based on some existing Japanese production, like the earlier incarnations of PR; members of the crew were using a Japanese comic book for reference regarding the alien characters. More news forthcoming as shooting continues. SCOOP #6 by ? Steve Cardenas will be a stunt double for one of the warriors in the fight scenes. It's not known whether he'll be a Ranger, but take into account that Johnny Yong Bosch has also been "doubling" for the movie. Steve's contract required him to tape three days of the movie as the character Rocky. He signed another contract which the specifics are unknown to me. I do know that the contract that he has recently signed he is hired as a stunt double and MAYBE a few more days as the character of Rocky. Johnny (since his stunt double broke an arm a year and a half ago) likes to do his own stunts and be a stunt double. I guess he has the abs and ab work to do it. SCOOP #7 by Anonymous The following people have been spotted on the set: Johnny Yong Bosch (doubling as one of Diva Tox's warriors) Catherine Sutherland (Kat) David Yost (Billy) Jason David Frank (Tommy) Austin St. John (Jason) Amy Jo Johnson (Kimberly) Jason Narvy & Paul Schrier (Bulk and Skull) No word yet on Nakia Burrise. Kat is still apparently the Pink Ranger. If the usual Power Ranger convention of civvy-clothes-reflect-the-Ranger's-color applies, then Kimberly is lavender or purple. The Rangers are NOT wearing uniforms of their current or previous incarnations. They have new TURBO uniforms (description forthcoming). More plot details: Malachor is the name of the volcano island, inhabited by the tribal Malachians and ruled by the benevolent Wizards. Diva Tox invades the island, captures the wizards and uses her powers to convince the Malachians that she is their god. She initially defeats the Power Rangers by blowing up the boat they are using to get to the island, and the members are separated and have to make their way to Tox's lair by themselves (Jason and Kimberly are captured separately, and Kat and the Blue Ranger--whoever he is--are together). SCOOP #8 by ? Steve Cardenas stated that he was leaving in the UK Version of "The Official Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Magazine". Also in the magazine, Jason David Frank gave a scoop on the plans for the Power Rangers movie sequel, and said that 85% of the story focuses on the Ranger's characters. SCOOP #9 by the PRZ Magazine The legendary Power Rangers face their greatest challenge ever as they experience extraordinary, often treacherous adventures in their second big screen motion picture. The movie chronicles the five teenagers' heroic attempt to save the universe when it is threatened by Divatox, the barbaric lady pirate intent on unleashing the greatest evil being ever known to man - the beast known as Maligore. The Rangers must help Lerigot, the kindly wizard from the planet Liaria, who holds the only golden key that can release Maligore from his volcanic prison on the island of Muranthias. Divatox uses all the wicked resources at her disposal to ensure that her plan of uniting with Maligore is brought to function. Facing perilous situations that take them from the African plains and an encounter with a 15-foot Python, to the bottom of the ocean where they must battle Divatox's warriors, the Rangers do everything in their power to prevent this evil alliance. All of these conflicts lead them to the ultimate confrontations at the Volcano on Muranthias. Their only hope of winning lies in their amazing new Turbo Powers and Turbo Zords. Each of these incredible vehicles, though appearing to be ordinary race cars, or off-road machines, possesses powers and abilities beyond anything the Rangers have commanded in the past. In the end, our heroes will need all that these new Turbo Zords have to offer to complete their quest. The Ranger Teens encounter familiar old friends and make long lasting new ones in the Power Rangers movie, the second in the Power Rangers saga. RANGERS: Pink Turbo Ranger Red Turbo Ranger Yellow Turbo Ranger Blue Turbo Ranger Green Turbo Ranger MEGAZORD: Turbo Megazord SCOOP #10 by "Turbo Racer" In the new movie, "Turbo: A Power Rangers Adventure", to be released on March 21st, the Rangers must stop the evil space pirate Divatox from getting the golden key from the good wizard Lerigot which can release the monster known as Maligore from his volcanic prison on the island Muranthias. The Rangers must use their new Turbo powers and Turbo Zords, which are Tommy-Turbo Ranger I-Red, controls the Red Lightning zord; Rocky-Turbo Ranger II-Blue, controls the Mountain Blaster Zord; Adam-Turbo Ranger III-Green, controls the Desert Thunder Zord; Tanya-Turbo Ranger IV-Yellow, controls the Dune Star zord; Kat-Turbo Ranger V-Pink, controls the Wind Chaser zord (it's white with pink streaks). They will be introducing a new eleven-year-old Blue Ranger in the show/movie. His name will be Justin Dinkelhuber. Jason David Frank is also leaving the show. It is unknown whether or not Trey will be staying, but there definitely will be a sixth ranger, Turbo Racer. He will control the Robo Racer, a big Police Car. SCOOP #11 by the Totally Fox Kids Magazine ITEM: New kid on the set: The Power Rangers have help from Blake, an eleven-year-old black belt! (Weird Fact: He used to be in Huggies commercials!) So, Blake helps out against Divatox and is along for the ride whenever the Power Rangers find themselves in weird situations. ITEM: The Plot: Divatox wants to free her fiancé, Maligore, from a volcano, and an innocent little guy named Lerigot has got the key. The Power Rangers try to stop Divatox, 'cause they want creepy Maligore to stay right where he is. Their adventures take them to all sorts of weird places like the treacherous Nemesis Triangle, where they sail aboard a freaky ghost ship! There is also lots of wild action in cool new vehicles! ITEM: Weirdest Villain: Johnny (Adam): "I'd call them slimy furballs with half stegosaurus and half ET looking faces! They’re called Putrapods." ITEM: Wildest Stunt: Jason (Tommy): "I had never been down rapids before. Rapids, shampids, I thought. Well, the water was ice-cold, but I decided to not get out of the river between takes. Ten times I had to go down those rapids. Other people warmed up in a spa, but I didn't want to get warm just to have to get cold again. That would've been worse." Catherine (Kat): "We were shooting this scene of me hanging off a cliff that's supposed to be in Africa. I'm wearing a T-shirt and shorts, and it starts to snow! I'm freezing and they say "Don't breathe, because we can see the condensation. It looks too cold!"" ITEM: Ghastly Ghost Ship Experience: Nakia (Tanya): "I was supposed to hit one of the monsters with a cannon. So I did and the cannon went overboard! Oops. We had to stop and rescue the cannon!" ITEM: The New Zords: You're the first ones to see 'em. Coming to theaters everywhere in Spring '97! Desert Thunder: Adam Wind Chaser: Kat Red Lightning: Tommy Dune Star: Tanya Mountain Blaster: Justin (Formerly, Rocky) ************************************************************************** **** THE ANTI-POWER RANGER PAGE by Marx Okman (Marx@aol.com) I have been asked to review Power Ranger pages, but have always refused because it's not necessary for the newsletter. But, recently, I was told about one page that I *had* to report on -- the Anti-Power Ranger page, located at http://www.iohk.com/UserPages/richardt/APR.html The graphics are horrible. It begins with a bad attempt at nice titling. It is called "The ANTI-Power Ranger Page" and it mentions that Power Rangers fans a.k.a. idiots are not allowed. Then, it goes on to saying such mature and intelligent comments as "They should be called "Weak Sexy Pathetic Rangers". It gives a two-line parody of the Power Ranger theme song (Don't go stinky Ranger's, you are so sexy). Next, it offers a Power Ranger survey and an Anti-Power Ranger chat. It goes on to a "Top 33 List of Ways To Kill the Pathetic Ranger Geeks". Then, it shows a picture of the Black Ranger with long maroon lines, obviously done horribly in Paintbrush, and says "Here's what the Rangers actually look like...bloody and monsterious!" Next, it gives a message to fans, saying that "Power Rangers made two kids in Norway kill a kid". To quote Rick Busby on this subject, this was said "because the Norweigians wanted a scapegoat so little Jimmy wouldn't be in trouble." As for the boys getting influenced by the show to kill someone, "That was a rumor. This is fact. The reports were that the child that was killed was STONED to death by the others. There were never any incident of the Power Rangers show doing this. The government, seeing Power Rangers as the "hit show" of the time, chose to ban it, until an investigation was held. There was one, and when MMPR was cleared, it returned to the air." The last paragraph is about "how to torture the Rangers" again. And, then he repeats "Power Rangers suck bad!" over and over until the page is (finally) over... The page is pretty graphic. This guy goes on and on about how much he hates the Rangers for creating violence and such, and then he turns around and talks about murdering them. Hypocritical and disgusting, if you ask me. Death is nothing to joke about... What I need from you guys is to e-mail him at richardt@iohk.com -- let him know what Power Rangers has done for you. Remember, nasty remarks will be replied with even nastier remarks. Try to be nice about this and just tell him "I don't think you'll care what I say, but anyway...I just wanted you to know that Power Rangers has changed my life around" or something of that sort. The more letters he gets, the better. Thanks, guys. Let's get this trash off the Net. ************************************************************************** **** TODAY'S REVIEW OF THE DAY by Joe Rovang (jrovang@mindspring.com) Today's review is on the new 5" Power Ranger Turbo figures. While the gimmick weapons do slightly interfere with the poseability of the figures (what figures' gimmicks don't?), I thought these figures' gimmicks weren't extremely interfering. Then again, anything beats poor Zeo Ranger I with her arm eternally out to her side - that was awful. There seem to be more joints in the PRT than in previous figures. The key actions were actually pretty cool. They do different things depending on which way and how hard you turn the key. The Power Weapons (Thank God, everything doesn't start with "Turbo") are pretty neat. I think I'll have to buy the Turbo RAM, since they look like they'd make a pretty cool car. Each Ranger comes with a generic sword and laser pistol. The Power Weapons' names are listed on the underside of the packages, and they are as follows: Red: Turbo Lightning Sword Blue: Turbo Hand Blasters Green: Turbo Thunder Cannon Yellow: Turbo Star Charges Pink: Turbo Wind Fire Apparently, the names of the weapons (except for Blue's) all relate to the name of their Turbozords. In conclusion, I'm generally pleased with these figures; in my opinion, they are better than previous figures. My only complaint is that, yet again, the female Rangers have been made from the same mold as the males. So far, the only Ranger figures that I know of that actually shape the females like females are the Movie Edition Rangers. ************************************************************************** **** THE POWER RANGERS ACTIVITY CENTER From the 1/14/97 issue of "San Diego (Business Wire)" Live video action and nine exciting activities are featured in The Power Rangers Activity Center, creating endless hours of fun for Junior Power Rangers ages 4 to 10. Gryphon Software Corp., a leading developer and publisher of children's software, Tuesday began shipping The Power Rangers Activity Center on hybrid CD- ROM for Windows and Macintosh. The Power Rangers Activity Center features original actors from the "Power Rangers" television series, including the Red Ranger, Bulk, Skull and King Mondo in live-action video as they direct players through a variety of activities designed to challenge and delight young minds. The CD-ROM will sell for a suggested retail price of $49 and will be sold in computer and retail stores nationwide. When children start The Power Rangers Activity Center, they are introduced to the world of their teen heroes by Alpha 5, the Power Rangers' robot sidekick, who moves and speaks in real-time live-action video. By entering one of the three areas -- Angel Grove, King Mondo's Machine Sky Base or the Power Rangers' secret Power Chamber, kids can choose from nine exciting activities, including word searches, mazes, slider puzzles and matchups, that reset into new patterns each time they are played, creating a new challenge every time. For example, in the Power Chamber, kids can build a ZEO Zord, by either following Zordon's blueprints or choosing to create their own unique ZEO Zord. In Angel Grove, kids will find a movie theater where they can view seven different live- action movie clips with commentary from the show's characters. Three levels of difficulty are available that can be adjusted individually for each activity. "The Power Rangers have been a favorite with kids ever since the series began," said Daniel Elvester, vice president of sales and marketing for Gryphon Software. "By using the original actors from the No. 1 live-action series on Fox Kids Network to guide the children through the activity center, we've added a realistic quality that makes the games come alive for kids." "The Power Rangers Activity Center brings a new level of interactivity to these popular characters," said J. David Koch, vice president, interactive development, of Saban Entertainment. "When they play with the activity center, children feel that they are part of the Power Rangers' world, because the characters speak to them directly." Gryphon Software is a leading graphics-software company specializing in a wide range of innovative graphics-oriented software. The company has two areas of specialization. One focuses on children's software with a strong graphic orientation. The other focuses on graphics for video professionals, graphics designers and hobbyists. Satu Sharp (sana@thehub.com.au) was on the Late Night Radio in Australia. Her message was "Power Rangers Rule!" Marx Okman (Marx@aol.com) shouted "Go Go Power Rangers!" over the intercom of his Jungle Cruise boat at Disneyland on TAGJ. Lacey Chabert, from "Party of Five", stated that she watched Power Rangers sometimes, in a recent interview. * If you gave this to me, sorry -- I lost your name. E-mail me for credit. In the 9/96 issue of "Seventeen Magazine", Brekin Meyer, from "Clueless (the movie)", said that in addition to collecting Star Wars figurines, he loves Power Rangers and he and a friend dressed up as them for Halloween. * Thanks to Liz DeHoff for this sighting. The top consisted of the toy Zeonizer, painted silver. * Thanks to various members for this sighting. Anne Simon (p014482b@pb.seflin.org) thinks she saw Thuy Trang smoking and talking to another person in a restaurant in California. I was watching the "Singled Out" marathon and was I surprised when they announced that two of the twins on the "Twin Day" episode were named Tim and Ted DeFillipo. It was really nice to see them without Brad Hawkins supplying their voice, and also to see them fighting ("We want to get rid of the short girls." "No, we want 'em small, so we can c'ddle wit em!") Remember when BRAT428@aol.com reported that she saw a boy over the summer that looked *A LOT* like Johnny Yong Bosch in New Jersey, in Issue 97? Well, HPZeo@aol.com lives in New Jersey too, and one of the coaches at her soccer summer camp looked like him. Frank Salcedo, who played True of Heart, appeared in the movie "Magic in the Water" as a Native American who was trying to help the monster in the lake. * Thanks to Post21@aol.com for this sighting. David Yost was on GMTV (a breakfast show that airs Power Rangers) promoting anti- drug campaigns sometime between May and August. Jason David Frank was on GMTV Christmas and Boxing Day of 1995, and was "interviewed" by a guy called Mr. Motivator, the fitness guy on the show. Jason did a workout wearing vile orange and yellow striped Spandex. On a Nickelodeon TV-movie called "4 Points", a short 15-year-old boy is asked by his new 10-year-old neighbor if he has "any Power Troopers"? And for Beetle Borgs, they said when the two bullies challenged them to go into the Murrenn Estate. It should be Hillhurst Mansion. And, they also said Drew, Alex, and Jesse. It should of course be Drew, Jo, and Roland. [NOTE FROM MAX: This isn't Bandai's fault. Saban shows have last minute changes in the scripts, but Bandai is not informed of them.] ... that the recipes are only for special issues?
