A sneak peak at Issue 69. ************************************************************************** "TEN LITTLE RANGERS" by Marx Okman On an inclement evening, a tugboat pulled up to a small island on Australia. "It's our annual trip," one of them giggled, in her valley-girl accent. Ten intelligent teenagers stepped onto the rocky shore. But, they weren't just teenagers -- they were the Power Rangers! Kimberly Hart looked out at the wavy sea and sighed. It brought back a very unpleasant memory of her past. A memory she would rather forget. Because, the guilt was too much... Billy Cranston followed her. He wrinkled his nose and smelled the ocean air. He closed his eyes to the pain that had been created the last time he had visited Australia. It was the traumatic event that occurred and caused him to go from "nerd" to "jock". Jason Lee, Zack Taylor, and Trini Kwan stepped onto the rigid surface and looked around. They gave each other glances to keep the secret during the reunion. It had been awhile since they had met with the group, and they didn't want to let in on the tragedy that happened to them in Switzerland -- the tragedy that made them feel too ashamed to keep in contact with their old friends... Tommy Oliver blinked at the little cabin on the island, as he got out of the boat. The mountainous surface reminded him of the time when he had let Rita Repulsa attempt to push two of his classmates off the edge of a cliff. Those days were best forgotten, he reminded himself. But, could he *really* forget? Adam Park, Aisha Campbell, and Rocky DeSantos followed close behind. They shivered at a small ditch on the side of the island. It reminded them of a cave -- like, the one they had been captured and frightened in, by the evil forces on the moon. They pretended it was no big deal, but it was something they could never forget. Tanya Sloan was the last one off. She felt odd being the newest one to the group, especially with all these strangers visiting on the reunion. And, when the kids began talking about their last trip to Australia, she felt bad that she couldn't be included in the conversation. She hated how she was always left out of everything -- how would she ever get them to listen to her...to pay attention to her? The ten teenagers gathered and opened the big door to the old house resting on the island. They were excited that their friend, Katherine Hillard, let them stay at the house while she was doing a project to help the homeless in Washington D.C. They had the whole weekend to themselves. They were looking forward to having fun... All except one teen. The teen that couldn't take everything wrong and unpleasant in their life. The teen that secretly hated all of the others...and, who was quietly planning their deaths. "Good thing Kat's away", the teen thought. "She's the only one I can stand. Only ten of us here -- that's not too much to handle. And, after this weekend, only two Power Rangers will exist any longer!" After fun and games, all of them were gathered in the living room, sipping soda. And, suddenly -- the lights went out and a strange and eerie voice filled the room. The Rangers shivered as they listened to the message: "Kimberly Hart, you have been accused of attempting to drown a small child. William Cranston, you are accused of brutally attacking a group of bullies. Trini Kwan, Jason Lee Scott, and Zachary Taylor -- you are accused of vandalism and prisonment. Thomas Oliver, you are accused of attempting to murder two innocent people and destruction of a city. Adam Park, Rocky DeSantos, and Aisha Campbell -- you are accused of attacking a group of kids, and vandalism of a school. Tanya Sloan, you are accused of loading a virus onto a school's computer system. I hope you are all willing to pay your punishments". The lights returned on, and the Rangers starred at each other's cold, bloodless faces. Was the truth uncovered? "This is crazy!" Zack stuttered. "I don't know what that guy is talking about!" "How do you know it was a guy?" Billy asked. "Yeah, it sounded like it could be either a male or a female," Tanya pointed out. "It couldn't have been one of us! We were all here!" Aisha explained. And, then they heard the voice again: "Kimberly Hart, you have been accused of attempting to drown a small child. William Cranston, you are accused of brutally..." "A wire!" Tommy shouted. The Rangers followed it until they got to a tape recorder. "Who would do something like this?" Rocky asked, as the group starred at each other. "That's a good question!" Jason pointed out. "Is it true what they said? About the crimes?" Adam asked. The group fell silent. "Why doesn't everybody talk explain and justify what the tape said?" Trini suggested. "I'll start!" Kim groaned. "First of all, I never tried to *drown* a little kid. That is so totally bogus. Here's what happened -- I was under a spell of Lord Zedd's -- when I pricked my finger on a cactus, I turned into a real witch. And, after morphing, I was, like, being all witchy and all, and this little kid came up to me and he was all "Gimme your autograph!" And, under the spell's influence, I pushed him into a pool. And, how was I, like, supposed to know he couldn't swim? And, it wasn't my fault! It was Zedd's!" "Tell me about it!" Tommy replied. "I never committed a crime. When I was under Rita's spell, she made me the evil Green Ranger. So, I wreaked havoc on the city? So, I let the putties try to push a bus, with Bulk and Skull in it, over a cliff? So, I tried to destroy the Power Rangers? It wasn't me -- it was the evil Green Ranger. And, I am not evil now, am I? I think these are all misunderstandings -- the kinds you'll put on the cover of a tabloid magazine." Nobody agreed that they were just misunderstandings. "I'll just confess!" Billy exclaimed, holding back tears. "The last time we were in Australia, I was walking in the streets when a group of gangsters walked up and tried to mug me. And, I just snapped. I started to attack them. But, I got beat up anyway...remember, when I didn't come home? Anyway, after that trip, I changed totally. That's why I'm not such a brain anymore!" "We might as well confess, too." Jason sighed. "When Zack and I went to Switzerland, we had a pretty good year. Until we fit in with the wrong crowd. They were also from California, like us, and we found them very interesting. Then, we learned how wild they were, but we didn't stop hanging around them. Peer pressure took a hold of us, ya know. So, we ended up doing bad things. We tagged a wall there, and got caught. They have very strict rules. Since we were just with them, and not actually doing anything, we were just given a one week sentence in jail. And, we're very sorry for what we did. We're downright ashamed. But, we don't deserve a punishment." "We tagged a wall, too." Adam admitted. "But, it was kind of a different story." "Adam, it's none of their business!" Aisha exclaimed. Without hesitation, Rocky began to tell the others what happened. "When we went to Stone Canyon High, we were rebels. We used to tag walls, vandalize school property, and were bullies. Until a teacher named Mr. Anderson turned us around. He got us into karate and we totally changed. But, people at Stone Canyon would not accept us, because of our past. So, we had to transfer to Angel Grove High in order to get a new start". The Rangers starred in silence. Suddenly, Tanya broke into tears. "Oh, I admit it! Remember, that virus on the Internet? The one with the happy face, that I clicked on? Well, I put it there!" "I don't understand", Adam said, as he starred at the sobbing Tanya. "I wanted some attention. I wanted to do something exciting. You guys don't know that I'm capable of doing something like that. I wanted to show you. I -- I wanted revenge..." "Revenge? For what?" Billy asked. "I don't know. I just didn't feel accepted. I just...I don't know, okay?!" As Tanya continued sobbing, Jason starred at the others. "Who is behind this? Who knows about all this? And, why did they threaten to punish us?" "It's all a crack!" Kimberly laughed. "I'm not listening to this jerk. He can't scare me!" And, with that, Kimberly went up to her room... "I still don't understand the punishment part", Tanya said, through tears. "Tanya, don't cry." Adam whispered, with concern. "Drink some soda, it will make you feel better..." Tanya took a big sip, and then took a big breath. And, then her breathing turned into gasping. "I can't breathe!" she screamed. Her face became a pale shade of blue, as she lay on the couch and closed her eyes, in eternal sleep. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Although Tanya was the first victim, she certainly wasn't the last. When Rocky went to sleep, he never woke up.... "Rocky, it's morning!" Adam said, knocking on the door. "Rocky? Come on, we're all going swimming... Rocky?" Adam swung the door open, saw Rocky's lifeless body, and gasped. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "This is crazy!" Kimberly thought. "Two of our friends have died in the last few hours." "What do you mean died?" Billy pointed out. "They were *murdered*!" "Tanya was poisoned, but what about Rocky?" Tommy asked. "Is this the punishment the voice was talking about?" Aisha asked. "Well, how do we know it wasn't....suicide?" Jason questioned. The teenagers pondered this thought. Was it really self-murder out of the guilt that the recorder had brought along? Or, not? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Is the beach still on?" Zack asked, later in the day. "The beach?!" Jason asked. "How can you think about the beach at a time like this?" Trini growled. "Just asking...don't have a cow." Zack explained. "Don't have a cow? How can I not have a cow?!" Tommy screamed. "Two of us have already been killed. Who knows I'm not going to be next?" "Tommy, calm down!" Billy shouted. "We'll figure this out!" "Yeah? Well, figure this out -- I'm outta here!" Tommy yelled, as he stormed out of the house. "How can he leave?" Trini blubbered, as she broke down in tears. "This is supposed to be a nice vacation that I've been longly awaiting for a long time. And, we're supposed to give it up because of some practical joke? I don't want to leave!" Trini then wiped her eyes, and ran to the back porch. "The one who refuses to go," Billy whispered, "will surely be the next to go." And, she was... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Two hours later, Kimberly went to the back porch, to call Trini in for dinner, when she discovered her lying dead over her chair. With a scream, Kimberly ran inside and told the others what happened. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * After a few minutes of silent crying, Jason was the next to speak. "Now Trini's dead, too? How could they hurt such an innocent girl?" "I have a feeling we're all going to have a turn on the Wheel of Death", Billy moaned, shaking his head. "Billy, shut up!" Kimberly screamed. "You're too pessimistic. This is just a total nightmare -- that's all! Somebody pinch me!" "We can't..." Billy informed her. "Guys, we've got to get out of here!" Zack exclaimed. "I was trying to, before Trini decided to refuse." Tommy growled. "Okay, it's obvious we're all upset about this, but let's calm down and think of a solution..." Aisha calmly replied. "Hey, there's only six of us here," Billy noticed. "Where's..." "ADAM! He-he's dead!" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "I was just going outside to get some air, and I saw Adam", Kimberly explained. "Did you know he was dead right away?" Jason asked. In tears, Kimberly explained, "Yes. That's the thing -- he was cut in half." The reaction of the others was unbearable. Gasps and squeals erupted from the group, as Kimberly continued further -- "He was by the wood pile, so the murderer decided to use the ax, and...oh my Lord, it was the sickest thing I have ever seen. I'm never going to be able to forget the image..." "We have to figure this out!" Tommy yelled. "I don't believe it!" Aisha wailed. "Adam wasn't as much as a bully as I was. I was the biggest one. Rocky and Adam didn't really do anything. Especially not Rocky. And, Adam didn't do anything really bad. I mean, they didn't do much wrong. They only did a few bad things, but they don't deserve to die for their mistakes. And, I didn't do anything that bad either!" "I wonder if the murderer noticed that," Billy wondered. "Tanya's deed wasn't that bad, and you said that Rocky didn't do much. Maybe we're getting murdered in the order of our crime." "Hey, Jason and me didn't commit that big of a crime!" Zack explained. "We just fell in with the wrong crowd and didn't do anything when *they* committed a crime!" "Yeah...so, why are we still left?" "I still think it makes sense," Billy said. "The worse your crime, the longer and more tense you will have to be until you get killed." "MY "CRIME" WAS NOT BAD!!!" Zack repeated, in an angry yell. "This room is getting too tense," Aisha shivered. "It's the second night here. We only have one more day and one more night after today. Then, Kat will be here and everything will be okay." "Let's just try to stay alive for that little period of time. That's all we have to do..." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It was a bigger challenge than they expected it to be. After the conversation ended, all of them went up to bed. Aisha lagged behind to get a snack from the kitchen. But, as she struggled to find the kitchen light, a figure snuck up behind her and stuck a hypodermic needle in her neck. She screamed at the poke and then fainted. Except, she fainted to eternity... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Jason and Zack came downstairs together the next morning, talking about basketball. When they entered the kitchen, Jason tripped over a bump on the floor. As he looked down, he cursed and then screamed "GUYS? Guys, come down here!" Kimberly came down first, followed by Tommy, and then Billy. They knew what it was -- they wanted to know *who* it was. "Oh, Tommy." Kimberly screamed, as she walked down the stairs. "I thought you were dead". "He's not," Zack explained. "But, Aisha -- she's gone." Kimberly began to cry and scream, while Tommy and Billy exchanged glances. "How did she die?" Tommy asked Zack. "A needle injected into her neck." Jason explained, after observation. "Who would carry a needle here? They must have had this whole thing planned." "And, who would bring poison? Tanya was poisoned, and Rocky was probably poisoned in his sleep." "Well, Billy's the brain," Kimberly explained. "If anyone was going to bring poison and medical stuff on a vacation, it'd be Brainiac." "I told you, I'm not a nerd anymore! After the fight with the gangsters, I changed." Billy shouted, in defense. "Maybe that's just your alibi. But, when you turned athletic, all of your knowledge didn't disappear....I think you did it, Billy!" Kimberly shouted. "Me? Tommy's the one who just shrugs off each death!" Billy yelled. "What are you saying?" Tommy asked, as he gave Billy a cold stare. "If anyone doesn't seem to be surprised by the deaths, it's Jason!" "Hey, don't forget about Zack!" Jason shouted. "Come on, guys!" Zack sighed. "Kimberly's the one who disappears every now and then, right before a murder occurs." The five began to quarrel. Everyone seemed to suspect each other. "There's just one more stupid night here," Kimberly shouted, breaking the silence. "Then, we can get out of this hell!" "Until then, I want you all to stay away from me!" Jason shouted. "Especially, Tommy. And, Zack -- if you come near me, make sure you're not holding a weapon." "Excuse me?" Zack clamored. "You were the one who mugged those kids." "Zack -- this is not the time and place to talk about that...and, besides -- you had a little hand in it, too." "And, don't blame that on the other kids either! We were the only ones doing it! Not any of our "peers"!" "Stop suspecting each other!" Kimberly shouted. "Only Billy could get away with this..." "Hey, where is Billy?" * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "Guess I was wrong", Kimberly sniffed as she starred at Billy's dead expression and wrinkled face. "Billy -- the fifth victim?" Tommy cried. "I'll miss him..." "Does anyone know why he's dressed in a shower curtain and a wig? Did the murderer want him to look like a judge or what?" Zack asked. "I don't know," Jason said. "All I know is one of us is a murderer! We have to survive for just one more night. Just a few more hours." "Why don't we all go up to our rooms? Lock the doors...don't open them for anyone! No one can murder what they can't get a hold of." Tommy explained. "Smart idea!" Zack agreed. "Then, let's go..." Kimberly said, annoyed. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Late that night, after the sun had set but not too late for anyone to be asleep, Zack could hear the murderer outside his window. He knew it was the murderer because no one else was out of their room, or he would have heard their door unlock. He opened his door and stepped outside. Knocking on Jason's door, he whispered "I'm gonna catch the creep who's been doing this!" "What? What was that, Zack? I couldn't hear you..." Jason murmured. But, Zack was already gone. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * About two minutes later, Jason stopped saying "What? Zack, are you there?" and left his room to find him. The front door was opened, so he figured he was outside. Before he stepped out, he saw something he had never noticed before. On the mantelpiece lied a stone statue of a dragon, that resembled his Dragon Thunderzord. He thought about the memories of the Thunderzords and then remembered he had to find Zack. He stepped outside and saw something bobbing in the rigid waters. He ran over to it, and gasped to find that it was Zack, who had been thrown in the sea, and hit his head on the rocky surface. "This is crazy!" Jason screamed, and he ran back to the house. But, as he was about to enter the doorway, the same dragon statue he had been looking at before came hurling down at him from a window on the second floor... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Kimberly and Tommy realized something was going on downstairs and rushed down to see what was going on. They turned on the lights in the back of the house and ran downstairs... They screamed at Jason's crushed head. "Oh, no!" Kimberly screamed. "Where's Zack? He's the one! He has to be the one...he wasn't in his room, or he could have thrown the statue from his room or ..." "Kimberly -- look at the sea!" Kimberly ran over to the direction Tommy was pointing, and saw Zack floating in the water. She spun around to face Tommy. "So, it wasn't Zack. It was YOU, Tommy. I knew it all along!" "What are you talking about, Kimberly?" "Zack -- he's dead. We're the only ones left. And, obviously, I know whether I did it or not, and I didn't. You -- you're the killer!" "Kimberly, you're mistaken--" "Who are you trying to fool?!" Kimberly screamed. "Process of elimination, Tommy. I *know* it's you." "You don't know anything, you snippy little..." Sobbing, Kimberly whispered, "Tommy, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have suspected you. This whole thing is just so scary. I need someone to help me through this." Kimberly embraced Tommy, as he told her it would be alright. "Oh, it sure will be!" Kimberly said, with a change of attitude, as she held up the revolver that he had once hidden in his jacket pocket. "Now, that I pickpocketed your gun!" "What the...? Give it back to me NOW!" "Listen, Tommy boy. It's time to get rid of the one who killed eight of my dearest friends." "Kimberly, think about this. What about all the times we..." "Save it for the judge!" Kimberly laughed. "Save it for the judge!" Tommy lunged for the gun, but it exploded before he could get to it, hitting him in his side. He fell to the floor, groaning. "Oh, poor Tommy", Kimberly laughed. "Still in denial. Denial...I was in denial of the drowning..." Kimberly remembered the real incident. She had not been under a spell. She was having a bad hair day and was totally ticked off at the world. After morphing out to fight a monster at the beach, a kid had asked her for her autograph. She grabbed the child, and threw him into the sea. Didn't he know she had better things to do? "But, the little brat knew how to swim", Kimberly whispered in her mind. "He survived. And, "Pink Ranger Attempts to Drown Child" flashed on the covers of newspapers everywhere." Was it really happening? Was guilt really getting to her? Kimberly found herself crying, thinking about the terrible thing she had done. "I can't take it anymore...I can't take it anymore...I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!" And, with that, Kimberly raised the gun to her head and pulled the trigger. It was Guilt that finished them off, and completed the death of the ten of them... And, then there were none... Right? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * On Monday, three days after the Rangers had arrived, Katherine Hillard pulled up to the house, and as she entered, she was shocked to discover several dead bodies. "What in the world is going on here?!" Kat screamed. After further investigation, she saw nine of her friend's as lifeless creatures. And, then she realized that one was missing. Just as she was figuring out which one was absent, she spun around to a mysterious voice in the distance, as it said: "They all committed terrible crimes and deserved to be punished. But, us -- we never did anything wrong. And, now we are the only two Power Ranger's left on Earth!" In tears, Kat screamed at the murderer. "You're evil! Evil, evil, evil! Why didn't I see it before?" "Evil?" the murderer asked. "That reminds me -- you *did* commit a crime. You harmed the last victim. Er, the second to the last victim." And, with that, Kat was murdered, also. "There we go -- now, I finally have my ten little victims, my ten little Rangers!" Self-satisfied, the wicked teen laughed and said "I did what no one else could do! I am proud to say that I was capable of destroying the Power Rangers!"
