A sneak peak at the one-year anniversary ************************************************************************** BLAST FROM THE POWER BLAST by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) On June 10th, we were hit with a blast from the power past. Beginning with "The Spit Flower", the first repeating of the first season began since early 1995. With the lead character in the episode introducing the episodes, we saw everything we loved so long ago: the "Today on Power Rangers" summaries, the "Teenagers with attitudes" theme song, and the Public Service Announcements! And, how about the quotes? From "Take a picture -- it lasts longer!" to "Could somebody pick me up and bring me back to Earth 'cause I am, like, totally confused" to Billy's Technospeak -- "Blast" is just the burst you need to relive these infamous lines. What is it like seeing Billy before he becomes a jock, Kimberly before she turns intelligent, Tommy before he becomes Rapunzel, Bulk and Skull before their bafoonish days, Rita Repulsa before her makeover, and Zack, Trini, and Jason before their "Peace Conference" days? I guess you could say it's nice to see how much they've changed and how it's progressed from the first season to "Power Rangers ZEO". If you were a fan in the first season, you can relive old memories or finally get the first season on your own recording. If you have never seen the first season except for curious switches when "Power Rangers" came on, then you'll love to watch "Blast", because you can see what you've missed -- even though you might be confused how it got to "PRZ" when it was so different years earlier. But, a lot of people have been complaining. What if you already have all of First Season on tape, do not like how "insipid" it was, or would rather watch "Power Rangers ZEO"? Do you really have to get up Saturday mornings just to watch the show you like in the first place? How about that one episode your VCR broke on -- how long is it going to take for it to reair if "PRZ" comes on once a week? Is "Blast From the Power Past" a good idea or not? I think it is. Austin St. John will be a big part of "Power Rangers ZEO" and the new fans need to know the story of Jason in order to understand the Gold Ranger storyline. And, if you are only interested in the newest season, then you can still catch it on Saturday mornings. Sure, it may be early, but that's what Timers are for. The majority of us love to see the episodes that caused us to fall in love with the show, and we hope to catch all of the ones we missed that were never replayed sometime. And, we have "Blast From the Power Past" to do so. So, let's take the time to bow down to the Almighty Power Ranger God (a.k.a. The answer was five. After the commercial break, the host's son called in and informed him that there was now a Green Ranger, which made six. --On "Jenny Jones", a 6-year-old boy who loved to sing was on, and Jenny asked him what shows he liked to watch. He answered, "Power Rangers". -- On "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", Nicky starts preschool and makes a sculpture of a turtle in a shell. The teacher asks, "Is he in his shell because he's nervous about starting a new school?" and he responds "No, he's watching Power Rangers". -- I recently caught Toni Braxton's "You Mean the World To Me" video, and Michael Bacon (J.B. on "VR Troopers") plays her love interest in it. -- On June 21st, Florence Henderson came for a special chat with the students in my acting camp. She told us her stories, some acting tips, and then we asked questions (One of mine got asked!). The next night I went to her concert, she invited me backstage, and I got her autograph, shook her hand and got to kiss her on the cheek! This is Power Ranger-related because Ivan Ooze mentioned that he missed the Brady Bunch reunion. (STRETCH!) -- In the July 31, 1996 issue of "Disney Adventures", the Hot/Not column, which features a class's opinions on what's in and what's out (in this case, 6th graders from Kentucky), had the following: CLOTHES Hot: No Fear shirts Not: Power Rangers underwear or shoes [What are you saying, that *I'm* not in style? :)] --Here is some info. on Richard Lee Jackson (Jeremy in "The Rockstar"): Richard Lee Jackson was born in Redlands, CA on May 29. Jackson moved to Battle Ground, WA in 1983 where he still has a home. On a trip to California at the age of 12, Jackson went to Universal Studios and knew then that he wanted to be an actor. He started his career at the age of 13 by performing in local stage productions in Portland, OR, modeling, and doing television commercials. He recently guest-starred on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Baywatch" and "Power Rangers." JOHN: His Thoughts on Power Rangers In a June 1995 issue of "All-Stars", Austin St. John seemed to be very rude when someone categorized him as a Power Ranger. While participating on a celebrity ski trip, he said the following, after being asked if he got recognized there. "Yes, the second I walked into the door, I got hit by a couple of people for autographs. Some were people in the ski lines who were handing out the equipment. Then, when somebody yells out, 'Hey, that's the guy who was on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!' then it's over! I just put on my goggles and went skiing!" And, in the August 1995 issue of "All-Stars" in an article called "Austin St. John: Q&A with the Ex-Power Ranger Who's Still Got It!": He many not be the red Power Ranger on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers anymore, but Austin St. John's still got what it takes to make fans go nuts! ALL-STARS found this out when we invited Austin along for our fifth annual celebrity ski trip that took place earlier this year. "The second I walked in the door, I got hit by people for autographs! Then when somebody says, 'Hey, that's the guy who was on Power Rangers,' then it's over!" Austin told us he took off on his skis to escape hordes of fans! Here's a little Q&A with the guy who still has the power! ALL-STARS: What have you been up to lately? AUSTIN ST. JOHN: Lots of stuff! I've been traveling the nation, I'm writing a couple of books, I'm setting up a national fan mail sort of thing. I might have two movies for next year, and the first one I do may be with Sean Connery. ALL-STARS: Which super power would you rather have--the ability to fly, to be invisible or to read minds? AUSTIN: I think to fly. I've always been amazed with the air. I like to sky dive, which is basically kind of crazy too, jumping out of a perfectly good airplane! It's such fun! I love the feeling! And I've always liked birds and hawks. I don't like planes, but I'd like to be able to fly! ALL-STARS: A true or false question. I like to watch myself on TV> AUSTIN: False! I haven't even seen the last forty episodes of Power Rangers. I haven't had the time and I'm not real fond of looking at myself. ALL-STARS: Why not? AUSTIN: I'm very critical. I'm probably my own worst nightmare! (There's a picture of him holding a racquetball racket and the caption reads: Racquetball anyone? Austin St. John still keeps in shape, even thought he's not battling Rita Repulsa anymore.) ************************************************************************** **** DID YOU KNOW? .... that in July 1996, the Power Rangers ZEO CD Roms will come out? They feature PowerActive Words and PowerActive Math. .... that the first Power Rangers Zeo video is coming out? It's a 90-video (four episodes) video, titled "Ninja Quest", which features the mini-series "Hogday Afternoon" and "A Zeo Beginning". .... that two new Power Rangers magazines have come out: the Power Rangers Zeo Magazine, and the Power Rangers Zeo Chronicles? The magazines feature comics, pin-ups, and articles. The chronicles is a miniature episode guide. It features the first three episodes of Season One, Season Two, Season Three, and Power Rangers Zeo. The next issue will feature the next three episodes of these episodes, etc. ************************************************************************** **** PRZ POLL #11 This poll is "What titles would be good substitutes for some "lame" titles". A: I have a limit on my AOL account. When it gets over $60, it cuts me off until the 29th. I finally got my mom to renew my account, so I could send out the newsletter. Q: At the end of PRNL#67, you said "Nakia is beautiful!" Were you being sarcastic or what? -- sjones@toltec.astate.edu A: No, I wasn't. On the newsgroups, some guy said "NEW YELLOW RANGER IS BUTT UGLY" in one of his posts, but we all started agreeing that Nakia was a very beautiful lady. So, at the end of the newsletter, I put "Nakia is beautiful!" Q: Will "Blast From the Power Past" repeat all of the First Season episodes? A: No. They're just repeating the last 30. Q: Was Trini the only Ranger planning to leave in the Second Season? A: No. People think that because in a "Disney Adventures" quiz, it listed "The following Ranger will be leaving next season" and the answer was Trini. That didn't mean that Jason and Zack weren't going to leave -- the other choices were Billy and Kimberly...they obviously left off Jason and Zack because they were correct answers, too. Q: In Issue #49, you reported that Richard Lee Jackson, Ryan Parker from "Saved By the Bell: The New Class", was on Power Rangers but didn't know his role. Did you ever find out? A: Yes. He played Jeremy, Jason's cousin, on "The Rockstar". Q: Which CD Rom included Mighty RAW's unreleased song, "Gonna Make It Right"? A: It's on the Movie Maker. Q: I looked for David Yost's screen name on AOL but didn't get any results. Do you know his screen name? -- emi@ionet.net A: David Yost does have Internet access, but he does not have AOL. Wednesday, June 19th "A STAR IS BORN" While Tommy competes with Bulk for a part in a local TV commercial, the other teens take a trip to the beach and get trapped in an interdimensional cocoon, where they face a manacing menagerie of Rita's most malicious monstrosities. Thursday, June 20th "THE YOLK'S ON YOU!" The teens participate in a school talent show, but when Finster plants a monster on Earth, their regular talents aren't enough. They must use their super talents to dispose of it. Saturday, June 22nd "INVASION OF THE RANGER SNATCHERS" Rocky is star-struck when he, Katherine, and Tanya become extras in a sci-fi film shooting in Angel Grove. The movie-making bug also bites Prince Sprocket, but he decides that what he really wants to do is direct-direct the end of the Power Rangers, that is! Can the Power Rangers do a rewrite, and give Sprocket's film a happy ending? ************************************************************************** **** NEXT ISSUE! The special one-year anniversary issue of the newsletter, with the first Power Ranger murder mystery. One of the Rangers is a psycho and is slowly killing the other Rangers during a trip to an island in Australia. Plus, a new top ten list about the Power Rangers Newsletter, and a Music Box index, as well as a bunch of other surprises. Coming on June 26th, the date when the first issue came out -- supposedly! I made a mistake. In the first issue, it mentioned the Power Rangers being on the cover of the "TV Guide" that week. I thought it was the June 26th issue of the TV Guide, with Jason David Frank but later I found out it was the June 9th issue, with the Blue Ranger on the cover. So, the newsletter first came out on June 9th, and it now has officially been running over a year. However, the one-year anniversary issue will be out a few weeks late... Just think of it as a belated anniversary. Congratulations to Manny, who got his site back. Thanks to all of you who helped in getting it back. That's all for now!
