Saban has Approached Manny (manny@mit.edu http://www.media.mit.edu/Personal/manny/power ) about his website and consequently he has had to close it down! What does this mean to the writers? This means Manny is the biggest site, and you always start at the top to 'send a message'. Call to Arms: I propose a protest, that Saban is getting free advertising... imagine what they would have to pay someone to run a Website professionally! Manny did this for fun, no profit and enjoyed doing this! The next step will be to ban other sites, John Conner, Anne Cross, Carla Benton, and myself included... (Sorry I don't name them all, it simply slips my mind what all is out there currently, I'm rather distracted with another rant I am on.) Next will be fanfictions, drawings and the like. WE as responsible, action taking adults, of our community HAVE to take a stand. PLEASE don't ignore this, this is our chance to make a difference and say "Yes! I helped with that and we won!" Worst case scenario is this will be the last place Fanfiction can be posted, at least there will be somewhere, but I for one like for us to stand for a chance (It's not our *Right* to play in their sandbox...) We may be able to turn this around. The Web page for the petition to be sent to Saban & Lawyers on a daily mailing with my own letters is now up at: http://www.EnterAct.Com/~silver/petition.html PLEASE sign this thing and help get this site back. If we back down here we back down at all points. I am working with three reporters by phone and e-mail, and I have called in my favor of legal council, if we work at this (And this is by no means like the effort for the dear departed musician.) We can win! This effects all of us in someway. This action could reach to the writers of Fanfiction, to the Artists of Power Ranger Art, to other Web page owners. Taking a stand and carrying it as far as Boycotting the newsgroup, Products, sponsors and going to the papers, magazines and Fan related publications because they are targets too! Thanks, and may the power protect us all... ************************************************************************** **** SABAN SHUTS DOWN RANGER WEB SITE by Dairenn Lombard (piero@ab.com) Manuel Perez's "The Morphing Grid" Web Site featuring information, links, images and multimedia for fans of Saban Entertainment's and Fox Kids Network's "MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERStm," Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporations' "MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE" and Saban Entertainment's "POWER RANGERS ZEO" at MIT was forced into closing its virtual doors or face legal action from Saban Legal. This comes not too long after Scott Garrett's Amy Jo Johnson images repository on the web was closed down. Owners of Power Rangers related web pages remain in "sitting duck" status as Saban's online sentinels roam the web, locating Power Rangers fan sites, most likely through the widely known Yahoo! Web Listings service, contacting their Internet providers and serving them with papers. According to Saban Interactive, all "fan sites" are illegal because the only ones authorized to distribute material regarding Power Rangers is either Fox Kids or Saban. Despite the fact that the nature of the web is a free-for-all, sharing pool of information rather than a profit-driven, competitive market lined with legal protection; availability of any copyrighted item with exclusive rights to millions of people forces "public domain" material into the realm of bearucracy. Like many people, including those on the Internet, companies know very little about the nature of the web and the Internet as stated above and thus are taking pre- emptive measures to ensure their material is not being infringed upon. Protesting net- morphers assume that Saban is attempting to "clear the field" so that they may bring up their own official web site featuring their productions. The advantages to Saban in bringing up their own web site is information control. So-called "inside information" about their shows will most likely be pre-conditioned to leave an untarnished image upon their corporate reputation as well as leave a wholesome image upon their controversial programs. This is evident by how staff (and cast), when speaking officially to the press, recite the same lines when concerning the so-called violence on Power Rangers. The most glaring problem with an official Saban web site is that information will most likely be left "safely" incomplete. Another problem that plagues official web sites maintained by corporations is that due to the lack of ambition that is prevalent from fan sites maintaining their pages out of the sheer devotion to the program as opposed to the fact Saban's employees are maintaining the site by payroll only is that the sites often lack detail and newness. The only advantage to these sites are the "professional look" that corporations have purchased to make their, otherwise empty web site look attractive to those users of the web surfing with Netscape. Without the proverbial window dressing, there is only the equivalent of trading. ************************************************************************** **** SABAN SHUTS DOWN THE MORPHING GRID by Manny Perez (manny@mit.edu) Hello to all, I guess by now the word has spread that a law firm on behalf of Saban has demanded that my site be shut down. I have been reading many of your posts and appreciate the support and comments. I do think that Saban does have legal ground to stand on, and even if he did not I doubt by $23 in the bank would pay for a good lawyer. What I am mainly upset about is that he never contacted me, we never discussed anything about the site, and showed me absolutely no respect at all. The letter was complete impersonal and cold. I have worked on the site for about two years now. I have responded to thousands of e-mail and tried to be as helpful as possible. If I had done the same work as a professional web designer I could have made thousands of dollars, but instead, because I love the show, I did it for free and best of all it was fun. Shutting down the site has not only hurt me and my feelings, but those of many others. I housed numerous authors documents at the site and these will no longer be easily accessible. In addition to this, let us not forget the most important people to me, those who visited the site. Over the past 3 days I have received over 150+ messages from fans telling my how disappointed they are. Many of these are from parents, whose kids just wanted to look at the rangers on their computer and perhaps download a picture for a school report. I feel so bad for myself and everyone else. Like I said before, Saban does have some legal ground, but it's just not right. The fans, including myself, watch the show religiously, we buy Power Ranger toys, support his movie, and tons of other stuff. Yet, the only thanks I ever got was a slap in the face. The only thanks visits to the site got was a slap in the face. I think that fans do count, I think Saban should care about us. I think we deserve it, perhaps not legally, but morally. This issue really extends far beyond the scope of my page, as it appears as if the shut down of fan sites is a trend. 90% of the sites I visit are run by fans. I love these pages. It scares me to think that in the near future 90% of what I love about the web and the Internet will de destroyed for no other reason then companies saying "Ha, we did it, because we can." Laughing in our faces, because they think that we do not make a difference. I am still hoping that I can work things out with Saban. Perhaps some lawyer, trying to make a name for himself, talked him into it. I am hoping that Saban will be as cool as his show. I apologize for shutting down my site. If I had the money and legal backing I would fight it with all my heart. This is not just a quest for my page, this is a quest for the right for fans to admire their favorite TV shows in ways that are not dictated and enforced by the producers, but by ways that are felt in their hearts. I guess all I can do is write and call Saban and tell him how I feel. I do really love the show, I wish that I could condemn it for what has happened, but I can not. I hope that Saban will see how much his fans care and I hope that he will care as much about us. ************************************************************************** **** NICE TO MEET YOU E-MAIL ADDRESS: muggs@mail.tima.com REAL NAME: Kris Murphy BIRTHDATE: 7/8/80 CURRENT RESIDENCE: Mitchell, IN FAVE EPISODE: "Island of Illusion" FAVE QUOTE: "For those who possess the Great Power, all things are possible." "Barbie" dolls 11'-12' replica's that actually LOOK like the Rangers, and have their spandex to get into. The Kimberly and Trini and Aisha dolls really got me pissed because they look nothing like the actors. Dolls of all the rangers from Tommy- to Kat. and maybe even a little Alpha. It's something my daughters would really love. (and give G.I. Joe someone to talk to around this house.) -- ashber@allinux1.alliance.net My two-year-old daughter loves the Power Ranger Barbie dolls. She would like a Tommy one, so I think Male Ranger Barbie dolls (and maybe a Bulk and Skull one) would be the bets. For me, I would like to see some type of action figure where you see their faces, instead of those awful helmets and costumes. - BrazosBel@aol.com Adult sized Power Ranger T-shirts -- jan@iag.net I want a fully functional teleporter/communicator watch! From: muggs@ansel.intersource.com I like to see one of those communicator watches. -- EnsTomP@aol.com I would like a *very* good replica of the communicator watches. -- Marx Okman Either the MMPR or ZEO helmets -- nelsona@cadvision.com A Power Ranger truck -- "MegaFord" -- dragon@netropolis.net Saba, the White Ranger's sword. -- AnnSchumin "The Power Chamber toy with Alpha (not messed-up looking), MMPR suits in the background, and talking Zordon. -- Anthony_Alario_Jr@brown.edu ************************************************************************** **** ASK MAX Q: Why aren't they making Billy a Ranger? A: Because, David is still considering leaving. Right now, he is still on the show, but he also is undecided. Cast of the show think that he's going to end up leaving. Q: How can "Found and Lost" not be the season finale, when next week, they're going to start "A Blast From the Power Past", which will at least last all summer? -- cbunnel@ix.netcom.com A: I don't know if "A Blast From the Power Past" is going to last all summer. I don't think they're repeating ALL of the episodes, just a few. But, there *will* be some new episodes in July -- I know that much. Q: How do you know that Jason will return to become the Gold Ranger when there are so many rumors floating around the Internet (i.e. Billy, Tommy goes from Red to Gold, Brad Hawkins)? -- cbunnell@ix.netcom.com A: When people heard there would be a sixth Ranger, they began *guessing* who it would be. The only "rumor" that wasn't a guess was Brad Hawkins, because he was originally supposed to play the Gold Ranger. However, a new source from Saban told me that Austin St. John was playing him, and it was confirmed by other sources from Saban. Q: "What are the words after 'Ya gotta see it, it's coming'? -- Ben Schumin A: "Fox issues the power..." Q: What was the point of the "Billy in Aquitar" thing? -- cbunnell@ix.netcom.com A: It was David's way of getting off the show, but he changed his mind at last minute. Q: Why did Amy Jo Johnson leave the show? -- nelsona@cadvision.com A: "Power Rangers" was not her ideal role and she was getting a lot of offers. When her contract needed to be renewed, she didn't do so and was free to leave the show for the other offers she was getting. Q: Are Austin St. John, Walter Jones, and Thuy Trang going to be in a movie called "Cyber Strike" together? -- nelsona@cadvision.com A: Yes, but I don't know the release date. Q: I missed "There's No Business Like Snow Business, Part I". Did Amy Jo Johnson come back on the show and dump Tommy? -- andrewpd@erols.com A: No, she dumped him via letter. It said she met another guy. ************************************************************************** **** THE PRZ BULLETIN BOARD If you have an announcement you'd like me to print, send it to "BULLETIN BOARD" at marxokman@aol.com! --- Today's quote was said by Lord Zedd in "Rangers Back In Time, Part I". --- ManBat25@aol.com is looking for Amy Jo Johnson's episode of "Campus Cops" or David Yost's performance on "Circus of the Stars".
