Saban Entertainment, which in the last few years has become a veritable factory of kids' TV programming, is getting away with something few other major producers even dare to consider: It is producing its shows totally non-union right here in Southern California. Even the actors are non-union, which was virtually unheard of in Hollywood until Saban came along. Saban, which produces four live-action TV shows--including The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, VR Troopers, Masked Rider, and Sweet Valley High--currently has seven hours of live-action programming airing each week in Los Angeles, and none of the actors on the show is covered by a union contract. The Screen Actors Guild has tried to organize the company, but has been unsuccessful so far. SAG, however, has yet to deploy the most powerful weapons in its arsenal: the picket line and the recognitional strike. Many of the non-union actors in Saban's stable are now saying that it's time for SAG to act. "I think SAG has really dropped the ball on this one," said a regular performer on one of Saban's shows. "I think SAG should have a meeting and organize a group of actors who will go to Saban to picket. Saban is exploiting the actors as much as the actors are willing to be exploited, and there's nobody to stop them." Actors employed by Saban say that many of the shows' stars receive salaries well in excess of SAG's minimums, and that some are even covered by Saban's own health plan. But many of the other actors, particularly the guest stars, are paid less than SAG's minimum rates--some as low as $150 a day for 12-hour days--and none of the actors receives residuals, or are covered by a union pension and health plan. Making matters worse for SAG, the shows aren't being produced in Canada or in Japan or in some right-to-work state in the Deep South; They're being filmed right in SAG's own backyard--in Burbank, Valencia, and Sun Valley. "SAG is aware of the situation," said Ken Orsatti, SAG's national executive director, "and has been contacted by Saban's performers, who felt intimidated and threatened. We made an effort to organize the company by working with their performers, and when we began the efforts, several of the performers were released by Saban. We've had conversations with the company, and they're actively opposing the union's hard-fought contracts. SAG will continue its long-term and ongoing efforts." Saban, Orsatti said, "is cutting costs and increasing profits at the expense of their actors. The company is not providing union benefits, including pension and health protection, residuals, or safety precautions on the set. With Saban's type of action- oriented product, and because it is unclear whether they've adopted SAG and industry- negotiated safety standards, we wouldn't be surprised if a serious accident could occur, causing injury to the performers. In fact, none of the standards established by SAG contracts is being offered." Saban, however, says that it treats it actors fairly and with respect. "Even though our kids' series are produced non-SAG," said Barry Stagg, Saban's vice president of publicity, "our actors are treated with respect, earn fair wages for their level of professional experience, and have been working conditions." Saban, which has been headquartered in Los Angeles since 1980, bills itself as "the largest independent supplier of children's programming in the world." The company is wholly owned by the chairman and CEO Haim Saban. Part 2 of 3 will continue next issue... ************************************************************************** **** TODAY'S MMPR TOP 10 LIST by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) Here they are, the top ten things we'll miss when "MMPR" is gone... 10. "You think she is cute too, huh?" ************************************************************************** **** STRETCH The last week's stretch word was "toy". I got a lot of stretches, but none were in the area I was looking for. BEST ANSWER: "Dolls are toys, and Rita made the Ticklesneezer out of one Trini's dolls." I WAS LOOKING FOR: Toys are fun, and Rocky just wants to have fun. (Or, something about playing with toys, and how Rocky only wanted to play) Today's stretch word is "Cookie". ************************************************************************** **** APRIL FOOLS FEEDBACK A lot of you have asked what *I* did for April Fools Day. Well, here's the answer. (It has a teensy bit of Power Ranger relation in it, but purely by coincidence)...... Here I am, alone with my sister in my house. I just finished the April Fools issue, and am ready to make my sister a victim. My first attempt was to put pepper, salt, vinegar, flour, marmalade jam, apple sno cone syrup, and banana sno cone syrup (ya know, all the good stuff) in her orange juice but she claimed that she wasn't thirsty. So, then I wrapped a blue sheet around me, put on the Red Ranger mask and a top hat and got some hedgers and made some noise in my sister's bathroom. When she came out to yell at me, I stood in front of her door and yelled "April Fools". It might not have sounded scary, but believe me -- it was. The best part was that my sister jumped three feet!!! Here are the answers to the games in the Special Edition #1: ------------------------------------------------------------- Amy Jo Johnson has a tattoo. TRUE -- she has a butterfly tattoo on her ankle. Walter Jones only has nine fingers. TRUE -- he is missing his middle finger on his left hand. Jason David Frank heard about the Power Rangers audition in a trade publication. TRUE David Yost wrote a play that was performed off-Broadway. FALSE -- none of David's plays have been performed. Steve Cardenas doesn't like television, but prefers movies. FALSE -- Steve loves television. Austin St. John is lactose intolerant. FALSE. Thuy Trang was born in California. FALSE -- she was an immigrant from Vietnam. Karan-Ashley used to sing professionally. TRUE -- she sang with a group called KRUSH. Johnny Yong Bosch has a laptop computer. TRUE Catherine Sutherland got the part of Dulcea in MMPR:TM, but got fired when the producers realized her accent wasn't heavy enough. FALSE -- she never got the part. ------------------------------------------------------------- --Which monster has a Goody Bottle? None. The Ticklesneezer did, but the whole experience had been Trini's dream. --What play was being performed when Rita created the Wheel of Misfortune? None. It was called the Wheel of Destruction (The episode was titled Wheel of Misfortune). --Who were the first teenagers to become the Rangers? William, Alicia, Rocko, and Abraham. (Remember, they were back in time...) --A Ranger did a nude scene in one of the episodes. True or false? True. In the wild west, anybody who wore clothing that revealed skin was considered naked. Since Kimberly's outfit revealed *a lot* of skin, she was basically nude back in time (That's why all the people were staring at her when she went out for some air) ************************************************************************** **** ASK MAX Q: Where can I find MMPR stuff on the Web? A: The official homepage is: http://ic.www.media.mit.edu/personal/manny/power/html_docs/mmpr.html Q: There are ten MMAR episodes, and only nine slots, up to Thursday.
