A sneak peak at Issue 56 (and, even more...) ************************************************************************** **** TODAY'S REVIEW OF THE DAY by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) Today's review is on MMPR Fruit Rolls. Okay, we've already had a review on the Power Ranger food. But, now there are all-new Fruit By the Foot's! If you don't know they are, they're these 3-feet long fruit rollups that are rolled up into a small ball and stuck together by a sticker... Okay, so you don't want me to spend a whole review on fruit snacks. So, I'll just tell you that you get much more than a mouthful. It includes a lot of hard-to-find MMPR merchandise with the box... First of all, the thing is made by "Farley's", in case you wanted to know. The front shows six Rangers posing with a giant fruit roll behind them. Underneath the picture it states "Enriched with Vitamins C, E, Beta Carotene". Nutrition!!! Yea! Second of all, the back has a bedroom defender. You punch out the figure on the back and get a free "Do Not Disturb" sign which shows a Ranger or Rangers (Either White Ranger; Blue and Black; Pink and Yellow; or Red) and the words "You Better Knock!" or something similar to it. And, it says "Get All 4, Dude!; Place the "Bedroom Defender" on your door knob and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will protect you from the forces of evil. Brothers and sisters BEWARE!" Third: It includes a coupon to get $3.00 off of a White Ranger video. This includes "Where There's Smoke There's Fire", "Goldar's Vice-Versa", and "Rocky Just Wants To Have Fun". That should bring the video down to $8.98 -- a pretty good deal. Here's some news for you -- I was very careful in opening the box and the wrapper. You should have seen my friends at lunch -- they were disgusted by how long it took me to open a wrapper and how I stuffed the strip in to the package when I was done. See, there are collectible "Power Ranger Profiles" on each strip. They are different colors, according to the Ranger -- and they include facts, pictures, and trivia on the Ranger. All my friends quiz me and I only missed one (I didn't know the name of the weapon the Mega Thunderzord used -- I said Power Sword, but the answer was Thunder Saber -- never heard that name before). Each box includes every Ranger, so you don't have to buy more than one box to collect them all. You also get two extras... So, here's the deal. Every week, in place of "Sincerely Yours", I will post the strip on one of the six Rangers. I will randomly select them from my box of magic (The box that the fruit rolls came in, that I put all the wrappers back in) and I will type up everything on the strip. Oh, box of magic, what will we get today? ... Today's strip is Blue, which means "Billy"... ************************************************************************** **** POWER RANGERS STRIP SHOW #1 The box of magic chose Billy, the Blue Ranger. * * * * * * * * * * * SERIES ONE (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers symbol) "Power Rangers Profile" Collect 'Em! "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers ************************************************************************** **** I NEED *YOUR* HELP! by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) There is a Power Rangers fan board on "America Online". However, one kid is not making it so fun. His name is Adam, he's 12-years-old and his e-mail address is AdamLobes@aol.com. He came on the board and starting influencing kids to post "Power Ranger Sucks!" all over the board, disrupting it. When I protected the board, he began harassing me. I finally had a chat with him, and we debated over Power Rangers being a good show or not. He says the main reason he doesn't like it is because it's violent and has caused many kids to be violent all over the world. Obviously, he read this in the "TV Guide" when it did a report about the effect of television on kids. So, what I need you guys to do is e-mail AdamLobes@aol.com and clarify that "Power Rangers" is not violent and explain why he should give it a chance. He refuses to listen to me, so I was hoping that a group of heads are better than one. So, please e-mail AdamLobes@aol.com and give your reasons why Power Rangers is not violent, and that the only "violence" is martial arts. If you'd like, make a copy of the message and send it to me, and I'll print the best replies in the newsletter. Thanks for your help, guys. If we convert one kid, it will make up for the thousands that they lost. T H A N K S ! ! ! ************************************************************************** **** MY STORY by Patrick Fritz (Patri56297@aol.com) Here's another view on MMPR from a teenager! I'm an avid Power Ranger fan and see almost every TV show. I'm 15 and watch a 5-year old show. I know it sounds stupid, but I like it. I mean besides Gargoyles, what else is on in the afternoon at 4:30 P.M. My family doesn't have cable, so we get the basic NY channels. The only other thing on is Talk shows. My Ex-friend introduced me to the show about 3 years ago. He was over my house for a swim in our pool and he said, "Let's go watch this cool show called Power Rangers." We had caught the tail end of it. I was immediately hooked on it. I have been watching it since. My dad is even into it occasionally but I am the main MMPR center of my house. My sister is upset because she thinks it's to "babyish" for me but I still watch it. I've been through it all with them. Intro of Green Ranger, Crystal of Nightmares, White Ranger, Ninja Encounter, Ninja Powers, The Movie and now the Zeo Crystal. The one thing I hate about Power Rangers is the Re-Runs. I've seen about 98% of all the shows. I fell in love ever since the beginning. Then when my dad and I got a modem for the computer and I encountered Marx Okman (a.k.a. Marx Okman) and he had told me he was doing a NL for MMPR. I was thrilled. I mean I had seen the show so I knew most of the trivia questions and I understood what he was writing in each newsletter. I know you've only heard about me through the Newsletter but since another NL reader had written a similar story in Issue #54, I thought it was time to reveal my inner secret -- I like a young children's show. That is my story, I just wanted the rest of you who read this newsletter my inner secret and I want to say one thing to Mark, "Mark, you are a good friend who understood where I was coming from. I think you are a wonderful and I also hope to remain a friend of yours, and I will always be there if you need to talk or just want to say "What's up?" Sincerely, Patri56297. ************************************************************************** **** DID YOU KNOW... ...that Walter Jones was on "Malibu Shores"? ...that Amy Jo Johnson was on "Campus Cops"? ...that "Power Rangers Zeo" will continue on April 21st? ...that one of our members, James Kerwin (Numbr007@aol.com), won top prize at the 1996 Telly Awards for his last film, "The Garden"? ************************************************************************** **** MMPR SIGHTINGS! Get this! I was supposed to work at "Romeo & Juliet" on Saturday night, but couldn't find a ride. Bummed and depressed, I missed working at the performance. Why would God do this to me?! Because, there were three MMPR sightings that night, and this was his way of keeping me from missing them! That's right! Three MMPR sightings in two hours! They included: 8:00-10:00 P.M.: Walter Jones plays one of Zack's friends (He did some neat tricks on a skateboard, too) 9:00 P.M. I already missed "Space Cases" once. I didn't miss the second episode, which had Walter doing some flips in it! 9:30 P.M. Amy Jo Johnson was featured in a bikini contest on the USA show "Campus Cops". And, here's some MMPR sightings in MMPR sightings: On "Malibu Shores", the teens said "She certainly has morphed" when they saw how much Chloe has changed over the years. On "Campus Cops", a lady said that her son was afraid of the phone because he believed that the "evil Lord Megazord was on it". *Thanks to Patri56297@aol.com and Sabba20@aol.com for these sightings! Wow! Three sightings in two hours! Is it just me, or is Walter the most successful of all of the Rangers who left?! ************************************************************************** **** NICE TO MEET YOU INERNET ADDRESS: EChen13@aol.com REAL NAME: Emily Chen BIRTHDATE: 5/24/82 CURRENT RESIDENCE: Nebraska FAVE EPISODE: "Friends Forever" FAVE QUOTE : "Oh! Here comes that cute Pink Ranger." -Ivan Ooze ************************************************************************** **** MMPR POLL #3 [RESULTS!!!] Reported by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) Last week, I asked you who you preferred more -- the originals or the replacements? Here's what you guys said: Adam -- 8 Zack -- 5 Neither -- 2 Both -- 1 MY VOTE: Adam. I doubt that Zack could make the movie as memorable. He is the "I'm a frog" and "Welcome to Jurassic Park" man! Aisha -- 9 Trini -- 6 Both -- 1 MY VOTE: Aisha, all the way! Trini just sits there and smiles. Aisha is one of the only people I actually would believe is an actual teenager (Kim is the other) Jason -- 12 Rocky -- 4 MY VOTE: Jason. Although many people who met Austin said that he was rude, you have to admit he *is* a good actor. "Missing Green" comes to mind... Kimberly -- 11 Kat -- 5 MY VOTE: Duh! Kimberly! She is not only my favorite actress on the show, she is my favorite actress all around. Green -- 8 White -- 6 Both -- 1 MY VOTE: Green. We got to see a lot of Tommy's character when he lost his powers (twice) and had to fight to keep it going the longest he could. The White Ranger doesn't show any character at all, unless you're counting his "I need White Ranger Tiger Power now!" lines... Thanks to everyone who voted! ************************************************************************** **** MUSIC BOX by Jenn Harmer (sthj@maristb.marist.edu) "SenSurround" (They Might Be Giants) Verse 1- When I was only a zygote, I still remember the time when there was nothing to know or to think about, except for the sound of my mind and the sound from outside, Chorus 1- SenSurround, down at the bottom sensible to ear and sternum. And the world first spoke to me in SenSurround. Verse 2- If Mom had known she was expecting, she might have gone to see "Jaws" instead of picking a film where the sound effects came right up through the floor and I'd be differently formed. * Chorus 1 * Bridge- Accident'ly in a coal mine it was found when they accidentally dug too far down and found the SenSurround. Verse 3- I still don't know who conceived it or where they got the idea, but there it was in the aisle by the exit sign, a woofer covered in wood to shake the room when it should. Chorus 2- SenSurround, down at the bottom, sensible to ear and sternum. Make the fakeness realistic when the action went ballistic, one degree shy of sadistic. And the world first spoke to me in SenSurround. Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba, ba (3 times) Verse 4- If I could swim underwater without having to breathe, if I could follow the trail to the ocean floor, I think I know what there'd be down there waiting for me. * Chorus 2 * ************************************************************************** **** SENSURROUND: The Interpretation by Leo Bicknell & Jonathan Chaffer The film it is referring to is "Earthquake," the first to use SenSurround. For no good reason at all, in case you just might be interested, here is what Leonard Maltin has to say about it: (from 1995 MS-Cinemania) Earthquake US (1974): Disaster Leonard Maltin Review: 1.0 stars out of 4 129 min, Rated PG, Color, Available on videocassette and laserdisc Director: Mark Robson Cast Includes: Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, George Kennedy, Genevive Bujold, Richard Roundtree, Lorne Greene, Barry Sullivan, Marjoe Gortner, Lloyd Nolan, Victoria Principal, Walter Matthau Review: Title tells the story in hackneyed disaster epic originally released in Sensurround. Marjoe as a sex deviate and Gardner as Lorne Greene's daughter tie for film's top casting honors. Additional footage was shot for inclusion in network showings. An Oscar winner for special effects. Panavision. And also from Cinemania, the definition of SenSurround: Sensurround Definition from Katz's Film Encyclopedia Trademark for a special-effects system developed by Universal in 1974 to enhance the impact of tremor scenes in the disaster film EARTHQUAKE (1974). It is a system that adds air vibrations to the sound track of a film during the dubbing process. A special apparatus installed in theaters decodes control signals on the sound track, triggering a series of audible and subaudible effects. The vibration of air movement against the body and ears of people in the audience creates the illusion of participation in an action-filled event, such as the tremor in EARTHQUAKE (1974), a battle scene in MIDWAY (1976), or a roller coaster ride in ROLLERCOASTER (1977). Only theaters equipped with a decoding unit, a special amplifier, and a series of between 10 and 20 huge speakers can reproduce the effect of Sensurround. The same films are later shown without the effect in smaller, second-run theaters. And with these thingys aside, on with the song! With the zygote bit, it shows that the person is approx. 21 yrs. old (1995 now). If mom had known she was expecting She might have gone to see Jaws Instead of picking a film where the sound effects Came right up to the floor And I'd be differently formed One line at a time: Mom Possible unwanted pregnancy Jaws Other popular film at the time, which, of course, had normal SFX SFX/Thru' the floor I don't think SenSurround ACTUALLY came thru' the floor, but it felt like it, especially to an innocent embryo. Differently Formed Possible deformity? Mental (I think) or Physical? Accidently in a coal mine it was found When they accidentally dug too far down And found the SenSurround This implies that the singer believes that this is how realistic it was, and possibly his feelings that SenSurround actually is what happens. The next verse just is about the technique, I believe. The extended chorus, with "Made the fakeness realistic/When the action went ballistic/One degree shy of sadistic," refers to the "realistic" re-creation of an earthquake, when everyone in the movie went "ballistic", and it was rather "sadistic" to subject many moviegoers to an "earthquake", real or not. The swimming bit is similar to the mine lyric. Just more proof I have way too much time on my hands! Dontcha think it's pretty ironic that a song about special effects masking things in movies that might be considered fake or ultra-violent wound up on... The Power Rangers Soundtrack!? To me, this song is mocking the movie. Just more proof that they don't listen to the songs before they put them on the soundtrack. I'm not complaining--If they hadn't, I would have never discovered one of my new fave TMBG songs! ************************************************************************** **** YOU'RE INVITED... ...to the Angel Grove Journey!
