After a succession of dastardly deeds, he succeeds in reversing the rotation of the earth, turning back time. The unfortunate result is that the Power Rangers are turned back into eight and nine-year old children. Master Vile leaves Rita and Lord Zedd to finish off what he started: total destruction of the earth. While the Power Rangers struggle to turn the world back, Zordon calls upon the Alien Rangers from the planet Aquitar to help defend the earth against Rita and Lord Zedd's attacks. The Alien Rangers bring with them their Battle Borgs, powerful fighting machines similar to the Zords. The Alien Rangers cannot stay on earth forever--they need to re-hydrate on their home planet. So Zordon sends each of the "young" Power Rangers on a personal quest: to find their own Zeo Crystal. Each Zeo Crystal, or "shard of light" has special powers and when assembled together with their other Zeo Crystals, will generate enough power to reverse the rotation of the earth and bring time back to the present, restoring the Power Rangers back to normal. While on her personal quest, Aisha learns that she will be of more help to her people by staying on and trying to stop the great plague that is killing the livestock. However, mindful of the quest for these "shards of light," Aisha sends a young American girl whose explorer parents were lost back to Angel Grove and our time with the Yellow Zeo Crystal. Meanwhile, Billy has stayed behind, trying to work on an invention that will turn the world back to normal. He succeeds, inventing a machine that ages him back to his late teens. But before he can fix the world, his machine is wreaked and time stands still in the past. The other Power Rangers succeed in their quests and meet back at the Command Center and assemble all the Zeo Crystals together. However, before it can restore time, Rito and Goldar attack the Command Center and steal the assembled Zeo Crystal. In the resulting mayhem, Billy is injured. Luckily, however, all the teens escape. Auric the Conqueror Zord: A gladiator-like robot with a wrap-around cape. POWER RANGERS ZEO UPDATES Zeo Update/Kenya: Aisha's replacement has been renamed Tanya. Perhaps "Kenya" was thought to be a little too ethnic. Zeo Update/Billy: Apparently, Billy's "injury" was not crippling as previously suspected. It's possible that it may have originally been a crippling injury, changed because David Yost may have decided not to leave the show. Current speculation has it that Billy might become Zeo Ranger VI, the Black Ranger. Zeo Update/PRZ: From "Playthings", Feb. 1996: "Power Rangers will undergo a total metamorphosis in 1996. Saban International will begin airing Power Rangers Zeo this Spring, in which the action adventure characters obtain their powers from gemstones, rather than by "morphing". Power Rangers Zeo will begin airing on the Fox Network in April. More new episodes will appear in the Fall." -- You can find more info. and pictures (Even of the logo) on Power Rangers Zeo at: http://www.users.nyc.pipeline.com/~zyuray/prz.htm * SPOILER OVER * ************************************************************************** **** KIDVID NOISE WARNING by MIKE DUFFY Knight-Ridder News Service Parents, beware of ``Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,'' a live-action children's series airing at 7:30 a.m. weekdays this fall on the Fox Children's Network. This ecologically correct rip-off of TBS's animated ``Captain Planeteer'' series is described as a ``science- fiction comedy adventure about five teen-agers who have been chosen by an intergalactic leader to combat the evil forces of Rita Repulsa, a solar witch who is out to destroy Earth and the universe.'' At 7:30 in the morning?! Yikes, prepare to hit that mute button. ``Mighty Morphin Power Rangers'' just might be the most annoying sight on early morning television this side of Willard Scott. ************************************************************************** **** KEEPING AMERICA SAFE FOR PERKINESS 3/26/95 Published: March 26, 1995 By DAVE BARRY Miami Herald As an American, I am ticked off about Sailor Moon. What is Sailor Moon, you ask? Shut up and I will tell you. Sailor Moon is a licensed-cartoon-character merchandising concept that is about to be dumped on us by the people who brought us the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. If you've never heard of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, go to a window right now, open it, and listen. You'll hear the high-pitched, irritating sound of small children all over America demanding in whiny voices that their parents take out second mortgages so that they can buy official Power Rangers action figures, lunch boxes, backpacks, underwear, snow tires, forklifts, assault rifles, ponies, marital aids, members of Congress, and hundreds of other licensed spinoff products. The cause of this whining is a daily TV show starring the Power Rangers, a group of low-IQ trailer-park dwellers who have extramarital affairs with their in-laws and screech at each other in front of a live studio audience. No, wait, that's the ''Jerry Springer'' show. The Power Rangers are a group of teen-agers who have the ability to transform themselves into crime-fighters with the power to beat the living starch out of evil beings while speaking very bad dialogue. I don't see this show very often, so to obtain more information, I called up my Research Department, Judi Smith, who has young children and therefore has Power Rangers coming out of her pores. ''How do the Power Rangers transform?'' I asked her. ''They call on the power of their Zords,'' she explained. ''The power of their swords?'' I asked. ''No,'' she said, in the tone of voice that you use to talk to a dog, ''their Zords. Z-O-R-D-S. Zords.'' ''Thanks,'' I said. A few minutes later, Judi called back to report that she had discussed this issue with her husband, Tim, who is a college history professor. ''Tim says they don't call on the power of their Zords to transform,'' she reported. ''He says they just morph.'' ''I see,'' I said. ''I asked him how they morph,'' she said, ''and he said, quote, 'They have morphing capability.' '' ''Well,'' I said, ''that certainly clears . . . '' ''He says the morphing capability must come from that guy with his head in the tube.'' ''Ah,'' I said. ''But they definitely call on the power of their Zords for something,'' she said. So we see that the Power Rangers can have a dangerous impact on our brain function, and now we face the additional menace of Sailor Moon. According to an Associated Press story, Sailor Moon is the blond, ponytailed heroine of a wildly popular Japanese cartoon show. Sailor Moon leads a team of female superheroes who wear miniskirts and go-go boots; according to the AP story, they ''combat evil and sexism'' using special powers that they get from their ''magical brooches, scepters and compacts.'' That's right: These heroines, striking a bold blow against sexism and outdated stereotypes of women, get their power from jewelry and makeup. We can only try to imagine the plot action: FIRST FEMALE SUPERHERO: Uh-oh! It's the evil villain Lord Pustule! He's going to destroy the world! SECOND FEMALE SUPERHERO: Not if I can help it! Toss me the eyeliner! The AP story also says that parts of some Japanese episodes will not be shown to American audiences, such as the one in which a member of Sailor Moon's team ''proudly refers to the size of her breasts.'' Do you want to know what really ticks me off? What ticks me off is this quote from a male spokesperson for the company that's importing Sailor Moon to the U.S.: ''Today's little girls want to be just as strong as boys. Barbie is not really an appropriate role model anymore.'' Do you hear that, Americans? He's putting down Barbie. He's trying to tell us that Barbie--who smiled perkily through the entire Cold War; who has remained fiercely loyal to Ken despite the fact that her hair is combable and his is molded plastic; who has been used to set fire to a set of underwear on the David Letterman TV show; who has never felt any need to refer to the size of her breasts--this guy is trying to tell us that Barbie is not strong enough. Well, Sailor Moon Spokesperson, perhaps you would change your tune if you took a gander at the Nov. 28, 1994, issue of Fortune magazine, sent in by several alert readers. On page 170, you will see two photographs showing the kind of grueling tests Barbie is put through by the Mattel Corp. The top photograph shows Barbie in a complete scuba outfit (of course it's pink), submerged in a tank, where she has been underwater for 15 straight hours--and her hair still looks perfect. The bottom photograph--which is, for my money, the most fascinating photograph ever published in Fortune magazine--shows Barbie in a machine labeled ''BITE TESTING FIXTURES.'' This tests to see whether Barbie will crack when young people, for whatever reason, bite her. Barbie is wearing black hot pants and a pink blouse; her right foot is clamped tightly inside the jaws of a scary-looking machine, and there's a noose- like string going around her neck. You'd think Barbie would feel depressed, being treated like this by her own manufacturer, but she looks just as chipper as ever. Her right arm is raised in a cheerful wave, as if she's saying: ''It takes a lot more than strangling me while crushing my foot to make this licensed character lose her fundamental American spunk and perkiness, Sailor Moon Spokesperson!'' You tell him, Barbie! The rest of America is standing behind you on this! We're sick and tired of seeing our precious cultural heritage undermined, and we're going to defend our traditional licensed characters against attacks from abroad, no matter what it takes, even if this means--and I do not say this lightly--that we must call on the power of our Zords. ************************************************************************** **** TOP TEN LIST by David (Rushnrulet@aol.com) Here they are! The Top 10 reasons it takes so long for new episodes... 10: Zedd and Rita figured they would try their hand at producing since they've been so successful with everything else they've done. 9: It's taking longer than expected to finish the "Rangers meet Barney" mini-series. 8: Austin, Thuy and Zack returned and since everyone was so happy to see them, they all took a few weeks off to celebrate. 7: Goldar is holding all the writers hostage until they explain why he has wings but can't fly to save his life. 6: The Tengas organized to get better benefits and "were sent off to a world peace conference." Before they went, however, they kicked Saban's tail clear to Miami. 5: The six Rangers had a little too much to eat over the holidays and still have a few more cases of ultra slim-fast to go before they can get back into their spandex. 4: The producers planned the delay to help promote their new line of MMPR action figures with "real go on hiatus action movements." 3: "If Rita could spend 10,000 years imprisoned, then it won't kill the viewers to wait a few weeks for new stories." (From Saban himself) 2: Instead of spending half their time talking to themselves about how they were going to do it, Zedd and Rita made a monster who demolished the Earth in 10 minutes flat. I ask you, how could somebody make an episode about that? And, the number one reasons it takes so long to get new episodes is: The producers are spending a lot of time, money and effort to make episodes with sophisticated special effects, real emotion, quality acting and a story line that will captivate America for years to come. ************************************************************************** **** THE GOSSIP SHOW by David (Rushnrulet@aol.com) I went to a party last night and I talked to a friend who was the uniformed stunt double for the Yellow Ranger during the first season of MMPR. She had a few things to tell me about the show that were surprising. First, she said that of the five original actors, Austin St. John and Walter Jones were the nicest. They were roommates and were really into picking up or at least trying to pick up girls on the set. Amy Jo and David (forgive me for saying this) weren't very nice people at all. They would fight with each other all the time and cuss each other out on the set in between takes. David was an especially nasty person because my friend went around and introduced herself to the cast and he flat out ignored her. Apparently he didn't talk to anyone and it wasn't because he was shy, it was because he was a royal jerk. As she put it, from what you see of his character on the show, he seems really quiet and sweet, but his isn't like that at all. Also, the set is very small and cheap as well as noisy and drafty. ************************************************************************** **** DID YOU KNOW...? ...that David Yost might have changed his mind about leaving, and the footage was replaced with new one? If he remains, he might be the Black Ranger! ...that Kenya was renamed to Tanya, because of the ethnic of the original name? ...that in the fall, MMPR will be played at 7:30 in the morning? ...that David Mallow (voice of "Baboo") had a chat on the IRC yesterday? ...that David Mallow does the introductions (Today on Power Rangers)? ...that "Masked Rider" is ending? ...that "V.R. Troopers" is ending? ...that next fall, a new show will be on called "Big Bad Battle Borgs"? ...that each line of dialogue is filmed separately, without filming in a group? ...that Tony Oliver played the voice of Rick Hunter on "Technoman"? ...that "effie's head" might come out SOON? ...that David Yost is a jerk, and Austin isn't? ************************************************************************** **** PAY-PER-VIEW reported by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) (A man and woman are sitting in director's chairs): Man Host: Based on the hit television show... [Special thanks to Lunette339 for the Jason, a005641t@bcfreenet.seflin.lib.fl.us for the Royce sighting, and mike_g@earthlink.net for the JDF info.] Like, I've said before that Walter Jones is going to be on a new Nickelodeon show called "Space Cases" that airs on March 2nd and will be on SNICK in the 9:00/8:00c slot. Jason Narvy was in "Prince for a Day," that movie that was based on "The Prince And The Pauper," which starred Joey Lawrence. Royce Herron (Ms. Appleby) was in the game "Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within," for about 30 seconds. She is in a book store talking with the shopkeeper about this book she just read and gets all excited and horny in the process. She was credited as Gabe fan. When he is not working on the set, Jason David Frank can be found teaching at his karate studio, Toso Kune Do, in Saugus, CA. One of the newer members of the MMPR newsletter, Josh Goldberg, is a student of Jason Frank's. [MAX NOTE: So, it's Henry Cannon as Mr. Caplan and Royce Herron as Ms. Appleby!] ************************************************************************** **** MMPR POLL #2 [RESULTS!!!] reported by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) The "Public Service Announcements"...we love them, we hate them, we turn off the TV when we come on. Music Composed by: Graeme Revell Produced by: Graeme Revell Executive Producer: Robert Townson The West Australia Symphony Orchestra Conducted by: Tim Simonec Orchestrated by: Tim Simonec Additional Orchestrations by: Ken Kugler, Larry Kenton, Mark Gasbarro Music Scoring Mixer: Dan Wallin Technical Coordinator: Malcolm Luker Music Editor: Josh Winget Okay, before I start I must say something about Revell's style of music. He must be John Williams incarnate. He uses the same style as John Williams. Trumpets for brassy fanfares, upper woodwinds for trills, scales, and various other note runs, lower brass for a "scary" feeling, and repetitive themes. Just FYI. 1) Prologue (0:58) * There's no voice-over. ("Centuries ago...") Kinda disappointing, but not really missed. * There's no "cha-ching" at the end of the song. (The "cha-ching" was when the MMPR TM logo came on the screen.) More disappointing than no voice-over 2) Ivan Ooze (2:07) * What an appropriate title, don't you think? * We hear the "bad guys" theme for the first time. * The attacks are very brassy, maybe even overblown just for emphasizing a point. 3) The Great Power (2:15) * Bad timing. It is WAY too early in the music programming. It's kinda like, "Okay...we had our opening, we met Ivan Ooze, and now we've got the Great Power." Yeah...right. * This is the 1st time we hear the "good guys" theme. * The instrumental balance is nice. * You can almost "see" the Rangers getting their new uniforms, zords, etc. 4) The Tengu's Attack (1:34) * Man...where's Ron Wasserman when you need him? Where's anyone when you need them? * This sounds WAY too much like Star Wars. If a person wasn't musically trained too well, they might get the 2 soundtracks confused. 5) Zordon Is Dying (1:49) * Parts to this song sound like The Theme to "Schlinder's List." The only reason I say this, is because an ice skater (Paul Wylie) skated to Schlinder's List, and my sister and I became obsessed with the theme. Yet another example of the John Williams style since he did Schlinder's List. 6) The Rangers on Phaedos (1:17) * Full of scales and arpeggios (Playing notes 1, 3, 5, and 8 up and down). * Very peaceful considering Aisha finds that skeleton. * There's a very nice trumpet solo in this song. 7) Dulcea To The Rescue (0:57) * Too short. * Very happy music, although she was creating some annoying sound. * A big brass/trumpet fanfare. 8) Journey To The Plateau (1:23) * I think the journey also winds up going into the arrival at the plateau... 9) Summoning The Ninjetti (3:26) * Very pretty...if you knew the words to this scene and could say them along with the movie, you can say them with the music. * There are female voices singing "Ahs"...very nice. I like Ahs. 10) Jurassic Ride (2:55) * Nice title once again. Revell's got a hang on titling... * Starts eerily or spookily. * Sounds like Star Wars again...I think it was a song with the TIE fighters that it sounded like this time. 11) The Monolith (1:26) * More of that "Ahing" from female voices. Nice...but the same tone and unchanging melody does get annoying. 12) Battle With The Gatekeepers (3:43) * Weren't they gargoyles? * The longest song on the CD. * More John Williams type music. Many brass fanfares and woodwind trills and runs. 13) Metamorphicons Confront The Rangers (2:22) * Our 2nd time hearing the "bad guy" theme. * More of the brassy attacks, this time adding violins and other strings. * Yes, once again it sounds like Star Wars. 14) The Megazord Battle (2:12) * New song...it now sounds like Jurassic Park. * We hear the "Dulcea To The Rescue" theme again. 15) Leap To Our Doom (1:46) * Yes, that's the title. Appropriate, huh? * You can almost hear the parents chanting "Leap to our doom..." * More "Ahs" but only in the beginning, and a new melody. * I have found my favorite song. :-) 16) Power Rangers Triumph (1:26) * Return of Dulcea theme, part 3. Can't say much more... 17) Freddy To The Rescue (0:57) * Short, but good since Freddy wasn't exactly the theme of the movie. * Cool rescue music. * Freddy gets the Great Power/"good guy" theme now. Maybe he should be the Gold Ranger. 18) Zordon Is Saved (2:35) * Beginning of the song is sweet and quiet. * "Great Power" theme comes back for the 3rd time. * Strange ending...it kinda just hangs there. Overall, not that bad. Even though it seems like I hated it, I really didn't. I LOVE John Williams' music, so I really don't mind hearing his type of music. HOWEVER, you'd think that any music composer could come up with their own unique style for their soundtrack. The only other problem I had was the length. It's a total of about 37 minutes. It could've been longer, adding in the music when the Rangers fight those Ooze creatures at the construction site, and the music while in the plane preparing to skydive. Otherwise, a good CD, but don't ask me to give it a grade...I'm partial to instrumentals. :-) ************************************************************************** MUSIC BOX by Jenn Harmer (sthj@maristb.marist.edu) "Dreams" (Van Halen) (Opening Instrumental) Verse 1- World turns black and white, pictures in an empty room. Your love starts fallin' down, better change your tune. Yeah, you reach for the golden ring, reach of the sky. Baby just spread your wings, and get... Chorus- Higher and higher, straight up we'll climb. We'll get higher and higher, leave it all behind. Verse 2- Run, run, run away, like a train runnin' off the track. Got the truth bein' left behind, fall between the cracks. Standin' on broken dreams, never losing sight. Ah! Well, just spread your wings. We'll get... *Chorus* Bridge- So baby, dry your eyes, save all the tears you've cried. Oh, that's what dreams are made of. 'Cause we belong in a world that must be strong. Wo, that's what dreams are made of. (Instrumental solo ad. lib) Yeah, we'll get... Chorus 2- Higher and higher, straight up we'll climb. Higher and higher, leave it all behind. Oh, we'll get higher and higher, who knows what we'll find. *Bridge* (Instrumental) And in the end on dreams we will depend. I'll post the letters here! Here's the last letter, the Mordant/Goldar letter ... From: MORDNT_GLDAR@delphi.com Greetings, We're on the Net. We're not happy about it, so we can't thank you for sending us e-mail. Lord Zedd says all of us have to learn how to surf. But he's making us share a computer. Personally, we'd even prefer a skirmish with the Power Rangers to this. They asked us not to tell you anything about the movie, but we can give you this little preview: remember how Lord Zedd kicked Rita Repulsa off the job of beating the Power Rangers? Well, Ivan Ooze has similar ideas about Lord Zedd - and he's tough enough to do it. To tell the truth, we're pretty happy about it: that Zedd's a tough boss to work for. This Power Rangers site is pretty cool, we hate to say. Remember, like all good Web sites, this one changes all the time. If you want more stuff, check in frequently. We'd write more but we don't have anything left to say to you. We used up all the words we know. The next item was a picture of the Rangers from the tour show. Since May 22, 1995, it had been downloaded 1008. That's pretty good! Here's the summary I found at the bottom of the MMPR picture: Stars of the most popular children's television series in the world, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Jason (Red Ranger), Zack (Black Ranger), Kimberly (Blue Ranger) and Trini (Yellow Ranger) will all be in studio tonight. Since its launch on the Fox Children's Network in 1993, this imaginative television series from Saban Entertainment has spawned a bonafide cult phenomenon. With an official Fan Club which counted 100,000 members in its first 2 months, Power Rangers holds ten of the top eleven best-selling home videos in the U.S. selling over eight million units. The transcript was edited for ease of reading and to correct typographical errors and was prepared in standard ASCII by emcee GaryLBrock. And, here's some extra MMPR findings: During a chat with Nikki Cox from December 27, 1995... a guy named MadMex12 asked "How did you like being part of the power rangers?" Nikki replied "I wasn't part of the Power Rangers." ************************************************************************** **** NEXT ISSUE!
