************************************************************************** THE MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS NEWSLETTER THE NEWSLETTER OF THE POWER RANGER CLUB ISSUE #49 -- JANUARY 29, 1995 "SHAPE IT UP, BULK AND SKULL!" ************************************************************************** WOO HOO! WHERE IS MY THOU AUTOGRAPH BOOK? by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) I have a story to tell and I'm going to try and tell it as calm as I can... As you all know, Jason Narvy was going to be in a production of "Romeo and Juliet". Well, I never planned on going because nothing good ever happens to me, but I offered to drive LeiLani (Mesia13@aol.com). So, it's the week of the play and it actually looks like I'm going to see Jason perform. And, I tell Terri Ann (tguingab@osf1.gmu.edu) and she says that she's going on the 19th and 20th and we can meet Rebecca (a friend of hers and a loyal MMPR fan) there because we're going on the 20th. So, I talk to Terri Ann and Rebecca on the phone and I also talk to LeiLani. We finally get everything planned, and on Saturday morning, I'm a total wreck. I'm jumping around my house, waving my "Skull" collectible figure in everyone's face and singing "Jaaassson Narrrrvy!" My mom wasn't sure if she was going because the play was so late at night but she was in a good mood and I got ready. At 4:00, my mom and I begin to drive to Los Angeles. We get lost on the way and totally freak out. We finally ask a bunch of people for directions and enter the gate of USC, 15 minutes late. We go to where LeiLani directed us to and there she is, reading a book, calmly. I was really excited because she was the first Internet member that I have ever met. So, LeiLani comes in the car with her book, "The Lost World". She begins talking to my mom and I am totally shy and barely say anything except "Uh-huh" and "Yeah". I'm that way...shy at first and then hyper the next. Anyway, my mom drops us off at the theater at 7:45. I had brought my autograph book, pen, camera, money, and "Skull" figure along. Anyway, there is a chorus of girls singing and LeiLani and I are looking for Terri Ann but we have no luck. So, at 7:50, LeiLani gets smart and asks someone if this is the theater for Romeo & Juliet. They respond that it's one floor down. So, we get in the elevator and begin to go down to Floor 2. I begin rambling on with "Good thing we asked...we could have been lost...". But, LeiLani is gazing at the wall in fascination. So, during my rambling, she manages to whisper "BULK!" I spin around. Paul Schrier is there kissing his girlfriend. I gasp, without thinking. My mouth opens wide, my eyes bug out...Paul looks at me and says "He's awake!" (I thought he said "Ease it, Man!") and everyone laughs at me because I look like a crazed idiot. But, of course, I am... Anyway, the elevator opens and there is about 5 minutes until showtime and we have absolutely no sight of Terri Ann. When the 3-minute warning buzzer goes off, we decide to go upstairs and buy our own tickets instead of getting the one's from Terri Ann. So, we get in the elevator, and right before the door closes we see a lady with black hair, carrying flowers. She matches the description Terri Ann gave me so we look at each other and say "Maybe that's her..." So, we go back down to Floor 2 and LeiLani sees the lady again and says "Terri Ann?" And, she replies "Yes. LeiLani?" I was soooo relieved. Rebecca finds Terri Ann and us and we all hug and talk...but, quickly because the show is starting. Before we enter the auditorium, we see Paul Schrier II and his girlfriend and we gather around him and tell him how big of Power Ranger fans we are. I finally gain enough courage to ask for his autograph. I am holding the Romeo & Juliet ticket so I have to uncap the pen with my teeth. I get all this slobber over it and hold the actual pen in my mouth. Then, I hand it to him. Of course, he makes a funny comment about this ("I don't want your slobber....ew, look at all these chew marks!") He asks for my name and I'm like "Uhm....Mark" because I kind of forgot for a second. He signed it "To Mark, Paul Schrier [Bulk]". Actually, it looked more Paul Seum (Because, the CHRIER was scribbled and the Bulk looked like EUM) but LeiLani explained to me what it said. LeiLani wants his autograph too but all she has is her copy of "The Lost World". So, she asks him to sign his book. He tries to sign the cover but the ink doesn't stay on. She tells him he can sign inside the book, but he signs the title page instead of the back cover. Anyway, LeiLani is clutching her book like it's a million dollars and Paul hands the pen back to me and I'm all like "Thank you..." Now, that I think about it, it makes perfect sense that he went to Romeo & Juliet. He's a big, big Shakespeare fan and his buddy is in it. But, what are the chances of him going on the same night? Riding in the same elevator? LeiLani and I are still wondering but we still liked how the odds went our way. After getting Paul's autograph, Terri Ann hands us our tickets and Rebecca and Terri Ann and LeiLani and I all start talking. LeiLani still wants to see David Yost and I still want to see Amy Jo Johnson. Anyway, Terri Ann mentions that she got to hear Jason Frank say "It's morphin time!" I didn't think about what she meant... So, we're sitting down in the theater, which is pretty small for such a gigantic building. I look at the program that a lady handed out. It is very thick and the cover says "Tour de Force Repertory Theatre "passing the magic on..." PRESENTS THE TRAGEDY OF ROMEO AND JULIET by William Shakespeare. January 12 - January 21, 1996. Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Forum Theatre". I open it up. I turn to the Cast of Characters page and there is "TYBALT, nephew to Lady Capulet................JASON NARVY". LeiLani is laughing at something she's reading in the program so I find the page and read the following: "JASON NARVY---(Tybalt)---Joins the Tour de Force Repertory Theatre for the first time, thanks to the liberal reciprocity laws in this state. Jason and his lovely girlfriend Margaret Ethel are expecting their 4th illegitimate child and Jason assures us that they can stretch those social security checks until Jason quits fooling around in free theatre and non-union television shows and pursues his first love: masonry. In the meantime, Jason has squandered his free moments in such filth as Oliver (Fagin), Hamlet (Laertes) and The Overcoat (Akaky). The Narvys send their best to Uncle Haim. The producers wish all our patrons to know that any resemblance between Jason and Skull of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is purely coincidental. Please keep your hands and arms inside the theatre at all times." Terri Ann later told me Jason wrote that. Isn't that kewl? He mentioned Haim Saban (They call him Uncle Haim, I guess). Anyway, while LeiLani and I are talking about Power Rangers and the use of VCRs, Rebecca holds us a glossy black-and-white photo of Skull from the first season with the caption "JASON NARVY". Then, she holds us a glossy black-and-white photo of Bulk with the caption "PAUL SCHRIER II". Then, she passes us a glossy black-and- white photo with each of the VR Troopers and Ziktor pictured in four squares. LeiLani asks "Where did you get them?" and Rebecca and Terri Ann reply "Saban Studios". So, that's what she meant by "We saw Jason Frank say 'It's morphin time!'" Now, all I need to know is how the $%#! did they get in??? ;-) Well, the show begins with a basic line-up between Montagues and Capulets. When Jason comes out, I say aloud "Oh my God!" and feel really stupid, too. The story begins and to quote Terri Ann, "Jason does an awesome job!" There's a ballroom scene where the Capulets (and, some disguised Montagues) are dancing and Jason did a very good job. He's an excellent dancer and at the end, he meets a girl and runs off stage to...uhm...do his taxes. ;-) The next big scene he has is when he comes out with the girl and gets in a fight with a Montague named Mercutio and ends up killing him. Romeo is totally pissed off about this (excuse my current day term) and begins fighting Tybalt and ends up killing him. The first act is ended with Juliet wondering how she can stay with Romeo if he has just killed her cousin. We told my mom to pick us up at 10, but the play didn't end until 11:30 so we went up to Floor 3 but she was not there so we went back up. There, we saw Terri Ann and Rebecca, and we had an interesting conversation about yellow skin and Pepsi. We finally ended up asking a lady to take pictures of us with her idiot camera (hee hee, Terri Ann) but I am so stupid, that I forgot to put a flash on my camera so mine won't turn out. But, Terri Ann got pictures so all is well. Anyway, we go back to the theater and the last act goes *very* quickly. Tybalt isn't seen until the last scene, in a churchyard. He's in a tomb and has "blood" on his face, but I didn't notice it until I saw him in person....but, I don't want to get ahead of myself. At the end of the play, Terri Ann, Rebecca, LeiLani, and I leave and there's my mom at the edge of the theater. She thought I was kidnapped or something and had been crying during the performance and walking around the arena looking for us, I found out later. Anyway, on a happier note, the four of us were walking out and Paul Schrier II was walking in front of us. He said "Good night, guys!" Isn't that kewl? He remembered us! Well, we said goodbye to Terri Ann and Rebecca. And, LeiLani and I were about to leave, when she pointed out that some of the actors were standing around. It didn't take long for us to spot Jason! After getting Jeannine "Juliet" Marquie's signature (LeiLani likes her because she was much better than the whiny Juliet's she has seen before), we saw Jason Narvy. After he had talked to his friends (It's weird seeing "Skull's" real friends, don't ask me why) it was our turn. I wanted to tell him how much I liked Power Rangers. I wanted to tell him how wonderful I thought he was. I wanted to tell him how obsessed I was with the show. But, all I managed to say was "I....I....." He flipped the book backwards to find out my name and there was Jeannine's signature (To Mark--Hope you enjoyed the show! Thanks. [heart] Jeannie Marquie; Juliet". I really hope he didn't think I was getting his autograph because he was in R&J. I wanted him to know that he is my idol as Skull. I think he knew that we were Power Ranger fans when LeiLani pointed out that she had Paul's autograph. He said "Oh, Pauly's here?" And, his friend said "Yeah, you didn't see him?" Anyway, he looked at Jeannie's signature after he said "What's your name?" and then, smiled and asked "Mark?" He looked at me, got a twinkle in his eye, and inscribed something in my autograph book. Then, he signed LeiLani's title page and we left. I was excited and disappointed at the same time. I really wanted to tell him how big of a fan I was. When we arrived at my mom's car, I began wondering why he got a twinkle in his eye when he heard my name was Mark. I read the inscription: "Marked for Death! JASON NARVY". I think he also included his middle initial, but there's no way to tell. He had told me (LeiLani told me) that the actor he killed in the play was named Mark. Oh, and just so you know, both Paul and Jason look exactly the same on television. Of course, Jason was wearing makeup for the play so you can't be exactly sure. But, they are both taller than they look on TV. Of course, they are only 3 inches on the screen. ;-) On the car ride home, LeiLani and I discussed topics as what has been going on in the third season (She has a defective TV and missed a lot of episodes), how much Bulk and Skull have changed, and the Power Ranger Public Service Announcements ("What is up with that Reality Check one?") We finally got to USC and dropped her off. After saying goodbye, we laughed about meeting Paul and Jason and we promised to give Rachel (Lunette339@aol.com) grief about it. I drove off, fell asleep in the car, and when I woke up, I was at home. It was almost 3:00 in the morning, so my mom told me not to worry about the stuff in the car. But, there were a couple of things I didn't forget: my program, my ticket stub, and of course...my autograph book. ************************************************************************** **** NARVY IN ROMEO AND JULIET by LeiLani Craig (Mesia13@aol.com) Wow!!! That's all I've got to say. This was by far the best production of R&J I've seen (well... I've only seen it thrice) (and Lord Montegue was apparently from the William Shatner School of Acting ("Nay... my lord... say... 'tis not... so.")). I'll leave the detailed account of our night to Mark, but I have to gush somewhere. (Btw, thanks again for the ride, Mark.) Narvy, as expected, was excellent. I never realised just what a prick Tybalt was. Conceited and pompous, yeah, but Narvy made him positively surly. Not to mention lecherous (at one point, he looked up his dancing partner's skirt, hehe). It was great; he really gave personality to someone who's usually just a plot device. His sword fights were nicely done (well, okay they all were, but for some reason he's the one I was watching most). Not as flashy as the other productions I've seen tried to make them (you know, lots of fancy, behind-the-back blocks and stuff), where they're just swatting at each others' swords until it comes time for someone to actually land a blow. Instead, it was more of a "Have at you!" and then they try to hack each other to pieces. It had kind of a Highlanderish feel to it (though, of course, no one got decapitated). Much more entertaining than the usual run-of-the-mill "well, I don't -really- want to hurt you" style fencing. I won't bother to go into the rest of the cast, since most people here probably don't care about anyone but Narvy (gee, on an MMPR group?), but I will say that both Romeo and Juliet were fantastic. For once, Juliet wasn't a helpless, breathy whiner. (Specifically, the "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo" sequence.) But that's not the best part. The best part is that Mark and I managed to show up on a night when Paul Schrier was there. (!!!) (*bouncebouncebounce*) We ran into him on the elevator just before the play, and I was too busy staring at the wall (for fear of openly staring at him -- he was with his girlfriend) to say anything. The we ran into him again just before the play started, and he was kind enough to indulge a couple of babbling, stammering fans (well, one babbling, stammering fan and Mark) with autographs. We also found Jason Narvy in the foyer after the show, and managed to get his autograph as well. But I couldn't figure out how to let him know I was a Power Rangers fan without actually screaming, "I love Bulk and Skull!" (Maybe I shoulda taken my Billy doll after all, huh Mark?) (Or we could've serenaded them with "Go Go Power Rangers".) (That Bulk and Skull 'get in shape' song?) So I now have Paul's and Jason's autographs in the front cover of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World" (but hopefully he won't mind). (It actually makes a nice frame to the drawing on the title page, though I somehow doubt it's exactly what the author had in mind.) As I type, I'm still fondling my book. And opening it up to that title page. Ooh, hey. I just noticed that Jason Narvy drew the "Skull sneer" onto the sketch of A.C.D. Heh heh heh. Now THAT'S a personalised autograph. ************************************************************************** **** "MMPR" POLL #1! 47 episodes of "Power Rangers" aired in 1995 (second season episodes since "Rangers Back In Time Part I," and third season episodes up through "Rangers In Reverse.") A LOT of great stuff has happened in those episodes that probably deserves some kind of notice. So what we are doing is having our first annual "Power Ranger Awards." Kind of like the Oscars or the Emmys, the awards will find out what stood out in the hearts and minds of MMPRNL members. Any episodes aired in 1995 qualify. So make your choices, and choose them well. Here are the categories.... 1. Best Regular Actor or Actress on "MMPR": 2. Best Villain/Monster: 3. Best Episode: 4. Best Guest Star: 5. Best Plot Device: 6. Best Outfit Worn By A Ranger: 7. Ugliest Outfit Worn By A Ranger: 8. Most Galactically Stupid Villain/Monster: 9. Worst Plot Device: 10. Worst Episode: 11. Stupidest Villain/Monster: 12. Best Line: 13. Best Special Effects on "MMPR": Results of this poll will be unveiled in the MMPR Newsletter #50, so that means you have plenty of time to think it over! Send your poll responses to "marxokman@aol.com!" ************************************************************************** **** LORD ZEDD UNMASKED by Terri Ann C. Guingab (tguingab@osf1.gmu.edu) For those who wondered about what the voice of our favorite Bad Guy looks like, Robert Axelrod will be guest starring on "Renegade" with Lorenzo Lamas some time around the week of February 3rd. On the flyer I've got, it says "Sun, Feb 3, 7 PM CBS-TV (Los Angeles)". I believe this show is in syndication, so times will vary. Any Renegade fans out there with an airing schedule (so we can figure out which episode he'll be in)? ************************************************************************** **** MMPR SIGHTINGS Jason Narvy was recently seen playing Tybalt (pronounced Tib-alt) in Tour de Force Repertory Theatre's production of "Romeo and Juliet". Paul Schrier II was recently seen in the audience of "Romeo and Juliet". Robert Hughes, who directed 21 episodes of the first season of MMPR, has been writing "Gooseflumps" books, which are parodies of the Goosebumps books. Amy Jo Johnson will be seen in "Susie Q". Here is the plot of the movie: Justin Whalin is playing a basketball star and his mom is played by Shelley Long. When Justin's dad dies, he gives up the sport. But, Susie Q (Amy Jo Johnson) was killed in a car accident in 1955 and was living in the house that Justin and his mom move into. Justin helps Susie Q end a family dispute and Susie helps Justin get back into basketball. It's a romantic comedy, but I wish it were just a comedy . . . Austin St. John was recently seen at a car show. Thuy Trang, Austin St. John, and Walter Jones will be seen doing a movie called "Cyber Strike". Send your MMPR sightings to "SIGHTINGS" at marxokman@aol.com ************************************************************************** **** DID YOU KNOW? by Marx Okman (marxokman@aol.com) Did you know... ...that Mr. Caplan is played by Dr. Henry Cannon? He said that Henry is usually grumpy and he doesn't really wear a toupee! ...that TV Guide recently commented on Power Rangers in an article about the best video choices. On page 39 of the January 20-26 issue of TV Guide, it reads: "CRITICS' VIDEO CHOICES: There's more to life than Power Rangers. To find it, we turned to the guys who've seen everything, Gene Shalit of NBC's "Today", and Joel Siegel of ABC's "Good Morning America." ...that music clubs (BUY ONE, GET NINE FREE) now included the soundtrack of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" as a selection. ...that there are now VR Trooper Happy Meals at McDonalds. ************************************************************************** **** MUSIC BOX by Jennifer Harmer (sthj@maristb.marist.edu) "TROUBLE" (Shampoo) Chorus 1- Uh-oh, we're in trouble. How to cope with the pain when your favorite Ranger disappears. #9. What to do when you get turned into a cardboard cutout ("H2O is the key!") #8. How to control your anger when Bulk and Skull are picked on. #7. How to unfreeze your friends when using freeze machines. #6. And here it is, the #1 PSA FoPRs are waiting for.... How to run like hell when you spill milk on an older kid. --Speaking of PSAs, I have two questions. First, LeiLani and I would like to know why they use "Billy" and "Kimberly" when talking about fantasy and reality. I also would like to know why the Rangers are trying to teach how to clean up the environment, and mention that a kid should practice throwing a can into a trashcan. Shouldn't that be recycled? I am hoping to include good top ten lists in EVERY issue of the Newsletter . The only problem is, no one has sent any yet. So, if you could PLEASE send me some top ten lists as soon as you can, I'd really appreciate it. Send them to marxokman@aol.com under the subject heading "TOP TEN LISTS." ************************************************************************** **** SINCERELY YOURS Could somebody please send me the Mordant/Goldar or the Ivan Ooze letter? Of course, the name of the school is the same as the city it's located in. And, both are located in two shows produced by Saban. But, I'm trying to point out the similarities on the Sweet Valley High CD. If you have all of the Power Ranger book & cassettes, the Rock Adventure, the movie soundtrack, and the movie score...you're still don't have them all. The "Sweet Valley High" CD/cassette has many songs that were featured on Power Rangers and VR Troopers. "She's Got The Answers" is Kim's favorite song from "The Ninja Encounter Part I". "Alive" is from Kim's gymnastic performance on "A Different Shade of Pink Part III". "All To Myself" is a Power Ranger theme. It was sung by Kathy on "The Potion Notion" and Kimberly performed her gymnastic routine to it in "Forever Friends". "On Our Own" was featured when the Rangers first arrive in Australia in "The Wedding Part I". "She Walks In Roses" was seen on "Grimlord's Challenge" on VR Troopers, when the little brat girl is practicing for the karate tournament. "Lotion (Jessica's Theme)" was heard on VR Troopers, but since I'm not too big of a fan, I don't remember which episode but it was when the Troopers were practicing at the Dojo. "Secrets" was heard on VR Troopers during a Skug fight (Virtually Powerless?) --All in all, a lot of good MMPR and VRT songs are on this album. So, get it! Get it! Get it! ;-) 1. Sweet Valley High Theme (Long Version) 2. Lotion (Jessica's Theme) 3. Rose Colored Glasses 4. She's Got The Answers 5. Not Myself Today 6. Alive 7. Rest Of My Life 8. My Jessica 9. All To Myself 10. Under the bio for Richard Lee Jackson (Ryan Parker - blonde guy, semi-clone of Zack from original Saved by the Bell), I found the following: RICHARD LEE JACKSON (Ryan Parker) -- Born in Redlands, CA on May 29. Jackson moved to Battle Ground, WA in 1983 where he still has a home. On a trip to California at the age of 12, Jackson went to Universal Studios and knew then that he wanted to be an actor. He started his career at the age of 13 by performing in local stage productions in Portland, OR, modeling, and doing television commercials. He recently guest-starred on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Baywatch" and "Power Rangers." Jackson's character Ryan Parker premiere's September 9 on NBC. I've seen practically every episode of both SBTB:TNC & Power Rangers, but I don't remember him ever being on MMPR. Does anyone else out there know which episode he was on? * RESPONSE FROM MAX * : I heard Keri Russell, from Mickey Mouse Club, Honey I Blew Up The Baby, Daddy's Girls, and a TV-movie coming out about a babysitter, was supposed to be an extra on Power Rangers. Since I have not seen her yet (and, believe me, I would have by now), that means the episode was taped a long time ago but has not been aired yet. It will probably air in the second-half of the third season. It's probably the same for Richard Lee. (And, if it was filmed a LONG time ago, what about those two guys who found the book in the trash in "Storybook Rangers"?) ************************************************************************** **** THE MMPR BULLETIN BOARD!
