Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, people will receive this morphinomenal newsletters for Power Ranger fans who love the show. Today, we'll have an interview with Ivan Ooze, the spotlight on Shuki Levy, a MMPR movie review, a showstage review, a poll update, and everything you could possibly want and more. So, relax, put your reading glasses on (Or, for some--take them off!), and enjoy the World of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. BTW, this issue is dedicated to one of the sweetest ladies I've ever met--Mary Morris. I hope you all know there is an angel reading this nl. 0:-) Also, hi to Jeff and Austin. ;-) Welcome to new member Tiger627, a big MMPR fan. Also, welcome to sbolton@nbnet.nb.ca -- if you have the alt.fan.power-ranger newsgroup, you'll know this fan really well. A very big Power Ranger fan who I (oops...) forgot to put on the list.....;-( YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT... The first quote from last week was a simple one. I was surprised when no one answered it. It was Little Kimberly from "Rangers Back In Time Part I." After being turned into children, Ms. Appleby (and her hippie hairdo) asks "Kimberly" to answer an arithmetic problem and Kimberly enthusiastically does so. When done, she explains, "20 goes into 40 2 times and 20 goes into 0 zero times which means 400 is divided by 20 twenty times." She uses the chalk to point at each number as she explains. I don't believe no one got this right. I like how she pointed at 20 (The divisor) when she said the answer. The second quote was easier, I guess. I should have put it as Quote 1 instead of Quote 2. Of course, it was said by Trini in "White Light Part I." Bulk and Skull enter the Juice Bar, tell Richie that they want their sandwiches NOW, and Trini says, "Excuse me, but does that account for your rudeness." Actually, it sounds more like, "Ethooth me, but doeth dat accounth for your rudeneth?" Aw, I just noticed that Thuy is pretty cute but I'm more of an AJ kind of guy. Ami Ree was the only one who got this right. Okay, I see that some of you are struggling. Back to the easies. ;- ): QUOTE 1- "Why would you want to go shopping everyday?" QUOTE 2- "Finally, someone's talking my language!" TRIVIAL PURSUIT I'll simply say that about 30 people jumped out and shouted Surprise! on "Happy Birthday, Zack." I would have accepted anything from 20-40. Everyone who guessed got it right or at least close. STHJ@MARISTB.MARIST.EDU got it right first and then ag216@freenet.toronto.on.ca and WBarezz. Good guesses from Ami Ree and Patri56297 though. It *was* a hard question. Again, today's will be easier. Today's trivia question is: Which Ranger had a flashback of the day when the team first became Power Rangers? For extra credit, which episode? For more extra credit, what was the flashback of and what reminded the Ranger of it? [Hint: This is _NOT_ a Crystal of Nightmares/Island of Illusion/Goldar's mirror thingee. Only one Ranger had a flashback.] Here is the scoreboard (In ABC Order): ag216@freenet.toronto.on.ca: 1 point Ami Ree: 3 points STHJ@MARISTB.MARIST.EDU: 2 points WBarezz: 1 point Ha-le-lu-jah!!!! On the FOX Kids Countdown, AJ was asked, "Do you have a man in your life........AMY JO [Chris Leary said Amy Joooo really sharply--he must like her too.] She said, "Well, I had one but I kind of broke up with him....[in Ivan's 'where's my autograph book' voice:] I'm a freeee woman. Well, I baby-sat my neighbors and they showed me two episodes of Jetman (The first two). They also showed me a book of Kaku Rangers (I think) and there were many monsters including the grave from "Zedd's Monster Mash" [Mlhoah?], Photomare, Nimrod [And AC/Mirror Maniac Monster, Pursehead, Scatterbrain, Flamehead Monster, Bookala, and Jaws of Destruction. There were others but I can't remember them off the top of my head. Here is a list of Sentai shows. It comes from Terri Ann C.'s FAQ guide: Sentai is a _genre_ of shows featuring superheroes, evil alien (usually) bad guys, cool fighting machines, and a lot of karate action. That's the short definition. For a longer definition, lurk alt.tv.sentai or rec.arts.anime. There have been several different shows in the sentai genre, of which ZyuRanger and DaiRanger are only two. In Japan, a sentai series (featuring one team/enemies/general plot line/set of machines) will run for a year before being replaced by a completely new series (featuring _unrelated_ teams/enemies/general plot line/set of machines). ZyuRanger ran in 1992/93, DaiRanger in 1993/94. The current series in Japan is KakuRanger (please forgive my spelling on all of these). Billy Teo (art20657@leonis.nus.sg) posted a list of all the Sentai series a while back: The list of sentai shows are as follows : Goranger ( 1975 ) Jacker Sentai ( 1977 ) These two shows were not originally considered part of the Sentai productions, but were labelled together recently by Toei in an attempt tocommemorate the " 20th anniversary of the Great Sentai series ". As such there is a new catchphrase to describe the Super Sentai shows as a long running series, but it's not as catchy. The original Sentai productions begins from : Battlefever J ( 1979 ) Denshi Sentai DenjiMan( 1980 ) Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan ( 1981 ) = Only three members! Dai Sentai Goggle Five ( 1982 ) Kagaku Sentai Dynaman ( 1983 ) Cho Rei Shi Bioman ( 1984 ) Denki Sentai Changeman ( 1985 ) Cho Shin Sei FLASHMAN ( 1986 ) = first show with dual robots Hikari Sen Tai MASKMAN ( 1987 ) Cho Zyuu Sentai LIVEMAN ( 1988 ) = first super combined Robot Kosoku Sentai TURBORANGER ( 1989 ) Chikyuu Sentai FIVEMAN ( 1990 ) Cho Jin Sentai JETMAN ( 1991 ) Koryu Sentai Zyuuranger ( 1992 ) Go Sei Sentai Dairanger ( 1993 ) Ninja Sentai Kakuranger ( 1994 - still showing ) Battle Fever J was different from its predecessors Goranger and Jacker in the introduction of the giant robot and giant enemy battle senario. Terri Note: Apparently, the next show in the series (scheduled for airing in 1995/6) will be...Oo Ranger. Yes, you read that right, Oo Ranger. Thanks, Terri Ann C. Now, today's spotlight is on SHUKI LEVY, a really admirable man that I've actually gotten to "talk" to. This comes from Terri Ann C.'s FAQ guide: _Shuki Levy_ SHUKI LEVY (Producer) collaborated with longtime partner Haim Saban in creating the concept for the phenomenally successful "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers(TM)." Levy is also a singer who's sold more than 14 million records; a composer of themes for more than a dozen feature films and television movies, as well as some 130 television shows; and a recipient of 15 Gold and Platinum records. He oversees the production and music for Saban Entertainment's "VR Troopers" and "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers(TM)." Levy was born and reared in Israel. Before teaming up with Haim Saban on American soil in 1980, Levy enjoyed seven extraordinarily successful years as a French television star, singer and songwriter. He sold more than eight million records worldwide and garnered the "Best Composer" Award at the 1974 Yamaha International Song Festival. Levy currently is completing the composition of what he calls his most ambitious project to date -- a musical opera based on the story of Masada, chronicling the Roman siege of the headquarters of a group of Jewish freedom fighters in the 1st Century. Today's morphinomenal interview is with Ivan Ooze... --Disney Adventures ("Our Lunch With The White Ranger".) _Disney Adventures_. New York: Disney Magazine Publishing, Inc., August 1995. Pg. 22) Here's where we left off: Then--presto--right before our very eyes, Paul became Ivan, the dreaded ooze-man. D.A.: "Why haven't the Power Rangers run into you before--were you hiding?" I.O.: "I'm the former Emperor of the Universe, and I've been buried for 6,000 years. Lord Zedd raises me from the ground. Not only am I evil, but I'm livid; I rant and rave! I get rid of Lord Zedd pretty quickly--I trap him and Rita Repulsa in a snow globe! Why not?" D.A.: "What are your special powers?" I.O.: "I can do almost anything! I just point a finger, and magic rays come out. If someone locks a door, I transform into ooze and go through the keyhole." D.A.: "What's your major goal in life?" I.O.: "To have complete world domination....and then to be loved." D.A.: "To be loved? A big ol' scary monster like you?" I.O.: "I don't think I'll frighten anyone...Well, at first, they'll have nightmares, but by the end of the movie, I'm actually quite likable!" D.A.: "So kids shouldn't be scared of you?" I.O.: "I rather like kids. I lead them away from their parents, and have a Fun Fair for them at the Ooze Factory, where they throw ooze on one another. What the kids don't know is that I've turned their parents into slave laborers!" D.A.: "If you were like to fight Batman, who would win?" I.O.: "(laughs) Well, I always thought of Batman as a wimp! There's an interesting thought: Ivan Ooze meets Batman! Maybe we could have a chain of Ivan Ooze movies!" D.A.: "If a kid met you on the street, what should he or she say or do?" I.O.: "They should walk right up to me and say, "Hi, Ivan. How are you? Can I have some ooze?" I'll remember that next time I see him on the street. Last time, I froze and just started to cry when I saw him. :'-( Now, it's time for today's review. It's a MMPR showstage review and it comes from ag216@freenet.toronto.on.ca (E.M. Chan). I saw it at skydome and when I went in, MMPR music (Mighty Raw's, I guess) was BLARING from the speakers. When they teleported, they shut off the lights. They must have fallen into an understage mattress or something. the costumes were quite cheap- plastic helmets! But, the special effects was kinda cool. The Megazord battle was UNREAL the rocks were foam or something. Lord Zedd blew up and popped like a balloon. Rita wore a purple dress and best of all, I got to shake hands with the White Ranger (who didn't know much karate, as did the rest of the rangers), who was not Jason David :( They didn't ever take off their helmets, though. Oh, I'm sorry, you wanted the PLOT! Ok-not critisisms. Plot- Lord Zedd zoomed from the skydome ceiling(Moon) to the stage(earth). FX: large red fireworks that zoomed from the ceiling to the stage and then exploded. On earth he made a castle and outer space aliens came to him, after that, he appeared in his flippy throne chair(flips so he dissapears) and the aliens agreed to help him destroy the PR's . Then the real rangers(on a tv screen) said-It's morphin time!- and the power rangers appeared on stage! The babies cheered. the parents snored. They did. No, just kidding, the music was too loud to snore. they battled some putties in an very unreal way and then I think Adam and Aisha were captured, put in cages, and transformed into two black and yellow birds. Rita fell down from her dumpster somewhere inbetween and the got sent back in orbit again. Some how, Adam and Aisha escaped, but after they defeated the first monster. The second monster was a bunch on tin made by putties. That one was destroyed quickly. Then lord zedd got so pissed he blew up into a balloon about the size of the stage and then he was popped. Then the power rangers came out to say, I hope you enjoyed the fantasy, kids, don't try it at home, blah, blah, blah and they shut off the lights and they left. that's it! I might have screwed up the second half of the plot, it was such a long time ago, I forgot. But the voices were the real actors and actresses. MAX'S NOTE: Thanks, E.M. I have another MMPR Tour review from a newspaper that someone sent me. BTW, I think that Justin Harvey (XSENTAIX) would have made a better White Ranger. I wish I could have seen the real Rangers live at Universal Studios Hollywood but I didn't like them back then. I almost saw the V.R. Troopers though. While searching online, I found tons of MMPR reviews. So, here is the first of the batch: MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE - * Critic: Teressa L. Elliott DIRECTOR: Bryan Spicer CAST: Jason David Frank, Steve Cardenas, David Yost, Johnny Yong Bosch, Amy Jo Johnson, Karan Ashley, Paul Freeman, Paul Schrier, Jason Narvy, Gabrielle Fitzpatrick PRODUCER: Haim Saban, Shuki Levy & Suzanne Todd (20th Century Fox) SCRIPT: Arne Olsen PHOTOGRAPHY: Paul Murphy, A.S.C. EDITING: Wayne Wahrman, A.C.E. MUSIC: Graeme Revell GENRE: Action - PG - 1:25 Ah, summer! A time of tan lines, baseball and wannabe blockbusters at the local multiplex. It was inevitable that a film version of the wildly popular TV show "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" was going to be made at some time. Afterall, filmmaking by franchise is Hollywood's "sure thing." But I sure hope it doesn't end up a blockbuster, because "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" is a piece of drivel. There is actually a plot to the film, although it is simply the means to get the six color coordinated teenagers into various martial arts fights where they predictably vanquish the bad guys. In case you're still stuck in the Neanderthal era of kid TV and think that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rule, I should explain that the Power Rangers are a group of six ordinary teenagers who have been chosen by a disembodied head to fight evil in our world. To do this, they have cool martial arts moves and are able to "morph" into super fighting machines when needed. And here the morphing is needed when the evil Ivan Ooze is released from his egg-shaped prison and begins to take over the earth. Unfortunately for the hapless Power Rangers, he has also stolen power from their mentor. So, off they go to a distant planet where they can get enough juice to get him back online. Amidst all this we have a few kicking, punching, flailing fights and at the end, a few morphing techniques which result in shiny, robotic fighting machines. I don't want to seem too much of a spoilsport, so I'll admit that the morphing stuff is somewhat interesting (even if it's already yesterday's technology) and fans of martial arts will enjoy all the kicking and thrashing about. Parents too will appreciate the lack of profanity and sex in the film--although they might not appreciate the violence. That said, I do have a question: Why does one of the female Power Rangers have to be dressed in pink? And why does she spend all the time in very short shorts and a midriff-baring shirt? (The other female Ranger in the group is in yellow, and while she wears short shorts as well, at least she's in a sweatshirt). Is the point that while girls can be tough enough to be Power Rangers, that power and control must still be tempered by presenting them as sex objects? I mean, how easy is it to high-kick in tight shorts? (C) Copyright Critics' Choice 1995. All Rights Reserved.
