Da-da-da-dah! Introducing....the newsletter that will make history in more ways than one! This newsletter is the first to focus on the movie and it's the first newsletter with my new occasional partner Justin Harvey a.k.a. XSENTAIX! Welcome one, welcome all to the Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger newsletter that will go to history books. When you heard "You got mail", did you expect that a giant celebration would be happening? Well, it is. And, we'll start this nl off with Roger Ebert's review on the movie. Some people may be disgusted, like me, and other people may feel offended, but don't be--this guy's makeup is worse than Michael Jackson and I'll bet he has to wear diapers again (Seriously.)! His review means as much as that kid handing out the Power Ranger toys at McDonald's. You'll hear members' reviews later, throughout the issue. Welcome to new member Chris7118, a Power Ranger fan who was on vacation. Read his article on the movie in Wednesday's nl! And, also welcome to WhiteRng, a Power Ranger fan who was one of the only ones left in the MMPR chat room. There are also some people on the Internet now reading this, but --the ditz that I am-- I forgot their names. Speaking of chat room, when should the next one be? Everybody tell me what would be a good time. There will be a sim coming up [See Power Ranger Sim by Justin Harvey] so you might want to just wait for that... or, we can do it sometime else? WHEN??? You guys can decide! :) Well, I'm banned from the Lois and Clark chatroom and, for no reason, the newsletter. Because, I stood up for MMPR, they got mad at me and this turned into a war that I ignored. Everytime I was sent a letter, I never replied. Finally, a week after no replies, they decide they don't like me. Now...oh well, #@%! Lois and Clark. Teri can't hold a candle to Amy Jo!!! First of all, I would like to say that AW94 was so disappointed by the movie that he was turned off to Power Rangers and asked to be taken off this nl's list. No can do--you will later learn to love the Power Rangers once again--hopefully, this issue will help. Or, write your own review on the movie. Hopefully, yours won't look like Roger's: 'RANGERS: THE MOVIE' OFFERS MIGHTY LITTLE Movie Review MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE One-half star Cast: Paul Freeman, Jason David Frank, Steve Cardenas, David Yost, Johnny Yong Bosch, Amy Jo Johnson, Karan Ashley, Paul Schrier, Jason Narvy, Gabrielle Fiztpatrick. Director: Bryan Spicer. Rating: PG (for action violence) Running time: 1:28. ......................................................................... * * * * Excellent * * Fair * * * Good * Poor By ROGER EBERT Syndicated writer "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" is about as close you can get to absolute nothing and still have a product to project on the screen. The movie is like those synthetic foods that have no fat, no sugar, no vitamins, no calories, but they come in bright packages and you can chew on them. What depresses me inutterably is that children, who are fresh and inquisitive, will go to this movie and, for 88 minutes, the movie will do what it can do to deaden their imaginations. The movie is like a little unkindness done to its victims. Its status as a product is underlined by the curious practice of adding the trademark symbol after every occurrence of the name in all of the advertising and promotion. (No room for an apostrophe after "Morphin," though.) The movie starts six teen-aged characters who have been marketed on TV and in toy stores. They have names, but no discernible personalities. None of them ever says anything more interesting than "You guys!" As teen-agers, they are skilled in-line skaters and karate fighters, but they don't get their REAL powers until they turn into faceless clones in Power Ranger uniforms with plastic masks and helmets. Is that the message? Faceless conformity is the way to success? Certainly the Rangers are not individuals in or out of uniform, but I wonder if they don't represent a triumph of merchandising over creativity. Children's heroes have traditionally have been individualistic and eccentric. The Rangers are not, properly speaking, even characters. They are color-coded products. In the movie, their city of Angel Grove is under threat from Ivan Ooze, an evil villain who has been imprisoned for 6,000 years inside a buried egg. Curious that 6,000 years ago he would have had an English name. Liberated from his prison by construction workers, he wages war on Zordon, the Power Rangers' face is projected as a hologram inside a big glass jar. Ooze has strange powers, including the ability to raise reinforcements by hawking up gobs of spit, which transform themselves into ooze-monsters. The movie also features various very large animated monsters that walk stiffly down phony-looking streets and do battle with one another in the tradition of the worst Japanese monster movies. Other action scenes involve the Power Rangers using badly choreographed martial arts moves on platoons of enemies, while mindless rock music drones on the sound track. Ivan Ooze is the only character in the movie with any personality or interest. Some of his dialogue seems to have been slipped into the film by the writers as an antidote to their own boredom; the kids who go to this movie are unlikely to make much of Ooze's complaint that by being imprisoned in his egg, "I missed the Black Plague, the Spanish Inquisition and the Brady Bunch reunion." Universal Press Syndicate Then, there is a picture of them in their Ninjetti costumes (Available on Hollywood Online) and the caption reads: "The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, as if you didn't know." I TOLD YOU ROGER BUGS!!! For good reviews, read Justin's and mine at the bottom of this nl--we're not full of #@!% like some people! I, for one, never noticed that it was spelled morphin without the apostrophe but I guess it is. So, when I say Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, I mean Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. :) Okay, unlike usual, there will not be info. about each cast member. This is not an ordinary nl (newsletter) so it's not going to have info. on ALL of the Rangers. DID YOU KNOW... Amy Jo Johnson said, in her opinion, there will not be a 4th season of Power Rangers. Thanks to mcgill@cyberspace.com for informing this. After we have had all the Rangers in the spotlight, we will be doing some of them over due to updated/more info. Thanks to Terri Ann C.'s FAQ for Paul's birthdate. TODAY IN THE SPOTLIGHT IS...PAUL SCHRIER NAME: Paul Schrier II AGE: 25 BIRTHDATE: 6-1-70 BIRTHPLACE: Las Vegas, Nevada HE IS: Bulk CURRENT RESIDENCE: Los Angeles, CA ACTING FACTS: He began studying acting in high school at age 16, and continued his training through various advanced acting courses until he joined a prominent Los Angeles theater company, The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. At the company, he took a particularly keen interest in the works of Shakespeare. He then embarked on a career as a commercial actor, before joining the cast of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (TM)." Schrier makes his motion picture debut in "MMPR: TM." FARKUS BULKMEIER NAME: Farkus Bulkmeier CURRENT RESIDENCE: Angel Grove, CA NICKNAME: Bulk FACTS: Bulk is a "wanna-be" bad guy who never quite makes the grade. His basic approach to life is to dive in head first and crash through any situation. He likes leather jackets, anything that makes loud noises and holds the record for most hot dogs eaten at the youth center. He hates P.E., stale donuts and oysters (because the shells hurt his teeth.) BULK ON SKULL: "If I didn't let Skull hang out with me, what would he do? Besides, he's good for carrying stuff." Well, we know about Paul Schrier/Bulk, now let's learn about Justin Harvey a.k.a. XSENTAIX. I know it's ironic because he's working on this nl (It's the start of our partnership) but, this was planned way before: SCREEN NAME: X SENTAI X and NinjaForce REAL NAME- Justin Harvey a.k.a. Tommy ( To little kids who see me do martial arts) RESIDENCE- Nashville, TN ( I don't have a country accent, I lived in Bakersfield, CA same as Marx Okman ) BIRTHDATE- November 25, 1979 FAVE EPISODE- "Green No More" and I wish I could say "Green Forever " FAVE QUOTE- I have always said this, but since Jason said it too, I guess it will count. "Just be happy with what you got." (I wish I could take my own advice.) Well, XSENTAIX, we know about you. Can you tell us about anything else? POWER RANGER SIM By Justin Harvey OK ... We have all waited a long time. But the MMPR sim is soon to start. The sim is when us fans go to a chat room (Command Center) and wait for Zordon (The leader of the sim) to give us the plot. A sim is like a role-playing game. It's when you act out the role of the Ranger you chose to be. You can be any Ranger you want, even create your own Ranger. But, only one of each is allowed in the sim. So hurry and let me know which Ranger you will play before somebody else gets it. (Green, White, Purple, Teal, Gold, and Kimberly/Pink [temporarily] is already taken). Each sim will last about 30-45 min. We will have one sim a week. And sometimes one every two weeks. Each sim will be recorded, and later turned into a script! Which will be submitted to Saban Entertainment! More is developing. We hope to do the first sim on the 8th which is next Saturday. The sim will start at 5:30 PST and 8:30 EST (PM of course.) If you can't make it, tell us what time you can, and we might change it. This is a time when Eastern Standard Time people can stay up and Pacific Standard People don't have to wait so long. X SENTAI X will post all the info. in a later NL. Be looking... NINJETTI! Justin. MR FLIBBLE AND HIS PICTURE By Justin Harvey Mr Flibble has a great picture. Ask him about it. It might shed some light on those of us who still don't get what Japanese Sentai is. (Ryu Ranger, you would love this picture. Ryu stands right behind Keba Ranger. WIth all the Dai Rangers on his sides. And every other Ranger all around him.) Justin. POWER RANGERS SUCK By Justin Harvey The bashers now have their own room. It's "Power Rangers suck". Only a basher would use such a great vocab. I have taken a trip to this board. You won't believe it, but these people think MMPR is a copy of Voltron! LOL, if they only knew about Japanese Sentai. Anyway, if these people still continue to come to the fan boards, let's very kindly direct them home. Just let them know they're in the wrong place. One of the things about the Martial Arts is to fight evil with kindness. I've learned it seems to work better. Your bro, Justin Note from Marx Okman: Justin, if you keep thinking up these GREAT ideas, then I'll look like a ditz. :( J/K-:) MIGHTY RAW NEEDS YOUR HELP! By Justin Harvey and Marx Okman Trouble in Angel Grove! Saban Ent. wants to 'put an end to Ron's coolness.' We didn't save A.J. (But, now we know she wasn't fired-- just worn out) but we can save Mighty Raw. Just write a business letter to Saban Entertainment about why Ron a.k.a. Aaron a.k.a. Mighty RAW is so cool! Be sure to end with your real name. This time we can do something--before AJ was already gone! SO, WRITE YOUR LETTERS ABOUT MIGHTY RAW NOW! And, you can also write for other people who like Mighty Raw but are on vacation or write for other people I don't think that will be necessary though. :) Well, the trivia question was too easy because EVERYONE who guessed got it right. It was Bulk and Skull from "White Light Part I." XSENTAIX was the first, RedRng was the second, then DarwnONeil, Randi Twin, Jojo Stix, WFowlks and CVAdam. And, Vmkrnmgn got a big lead and got 5 points! Here's the scoreboard: CVAdam: 1 point DarwnONeil: 1 point Randi Twin: 1 point Jojo Stix: 1 point WFowlks: 1 point Vmkrnmgn: 5 points RedRng: 8 points XSENTAIX: 9 points If RedRng or XSENTAIX get this trivia right first, one of them will win the comic book #1 (If I can find it). Remember, if you can't find a comic book, send me $2.50 and I'll get you one. CAN ANYBODY FIND ME THE MMPR COMICS AFTER #1? Anyway, here is today's trivia question: What is the name of Ernie's assistant (Before "White Light") at the Juice Bar? This is the only poll that has changed: BLUE RANGER-1 GREEN RANGER-1 PINK RANGER-8 RED RANGER-2 WHITE RANGER-3 YELLOW RANGER-1 CONRAD-1 Doesn't ANYBODY like the Black Ranger??? Remember, "he is a frog." :) Anyway, here is today's quote: "Volleyball is for dorks...and you guys' are dorks!" Actually, two people say this and either one will do. Don't get confused, Justin and Rick or you'll go back to 0! Anyway, the 5th poll is here: POLL 5-Give your review on "Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger: The Movie." If ANYBODY has these episodes on tape: Big Sisters, A Bad Reflection On You, Switching Places, The Trouble With Shellshock, The Green Candle Part I and II, Dark Warrior, Teamwork, Gung Ho!, A Star Is Born, and/or Clean Up Club, please tell me!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU... to Mr Flibble, who gave me the address to the Power Ranger site on the World Wide Web and to DarwnONeil, who gave me the titles (10 minutes AFTER I read the episode guide) and Terri Ann C. Guingab for writing the episode guide and EVERYTHING else! Also, to Mighty Raw and XSENTAIX for giving me some more info. on WWW, etc. Here is some info. from Terri Ann C.'s FAQ guide: An informed source, who wishes to remain anonymous responded to the rumor of Amy Jo leaving: "Well, I'll go out on a limb just to keep the rumor mill in check. You didn't hear it from me, but yes, Amy Jo is just plain worn out. Remember, these guys haven't had more than a week off in over a year, what with the series and the movie, and they're gearing up for the second film. Amy Jo, as I understand it, has gotten enough exposure to land a couple of non-MMPR features, and she'll be leaving to do those. Don't worry, this isn't a "peace conference" scenario; the writers have worked up a truly gripping storyline for her leaving, and the new Pink Ranger, an Australian actress (her name escapes me), joining the cast. The storyline will last about half the season. The main reason I'm telling you this is damage control; I don't want any vicious rumors that she was fired, pregnant, killed in a motorcycle accident, or abducted by aliens. She's just worn out (it is a grueling job), wants to do features, and has the looks, talent, and exposure to do that now. It's her choice, and probably a good one. She's at the height of her popularity, so why wait 'til the show is cancelled to expand her career?" [I've also heard that she's leaving to make movies, which are less tiring.] The latest buzz is that Saban will be introducing a new show next Fall called "Masked Rider". From what people have been able to glean from bits and pieces of info scattered across the Net, this show will use footage from the show "Kamen Rider". It's supposed to have something to do with a talking motorcycle and a grasshopper. Whatever. :) Now that we heard from Terri Ann C., let's hear from Justin Harvey [Hey, that rhymes! :)] POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE. A lesson. I had posted in a folder that I was disappointed with the movie. After seeing it two more times ... I"ve changed that view, and ... I've learned an important lesson. As most of you know, I am really into the Martial Arts. For the past 7 years I have been developing my own style called Shogun Ryu Ninjitsu aka Shogun Ryu Karate. In Engish, it's Dragon Warrior Ninjitsu or Dragon Warrior Karate. It's taken me seven years to develop the mental part of it alone. Now that it is complete, I have began to develop the mental part of it. This is where Power Rangers: The Movie comes in. There are 5 codes of ShoGun Ryu Ninjitsu at this time. The first and most important code came to me after seeing MMPR the movie my 3rd time. I never thought I'd learn anything more than good moves from it. But to my surprise, I learned a lesson inside a lesson. I've realized it was PERSEVERANCE that made me like the movie. Perseverance in simple terms means...Not giving up. And after learning this on Saturday, my life seems so much easier. As some of you know, for the past six months I have been talking with people at Saban Ent. I've been trying to get the role of the new Green Ranger, which I have written a script for. Everytime I've gotten close to getting this script done, or getting the part, something has gone wrong. This really started to get to me. But, I now realize, I must persevere. Something is bound to happen sooner or later. Also, I have learned that not only do I need to preserver for the role of the new Green Ranger, but I need to persevere in everything I do. You know, I persevered in the movie, and for that, I learned never to give up on anything. Wow, the Rangers did it again. }:-) My thanks to the writers, actors, and all others involved in the movie. Ohh, and my new views on the movie ...... It was great ! Everything was perfect, except the lack of Mighty Raw. (Ron, wish it could have been only your music.) The story was great. The new suits were great. And the new Zords were even better! Ohh, and I think everyone will agree with me when I say, Adam had the best lines. " I'm a frog. " and " Welcome to Jurassic Park. " Great lines. Great story. OK music, and The best Zords. If you haven't seen it ....... DO! If you don't like it, perseverer and see it again! Justin Harvey a.k.a. X SENTAI X a.k.a. Conrad, the Green Ranger. Here's my review: WOW! WOW! WOW! WOW! And, I thought "Different Drum" was good. I LOVED THE MOVIE SOOOOOOOOO MUCH! As usual, I was sad when I had to leave the world of Angel Grove and Phaedos to go to the boring and mundane city of Bakersfield. So, I spent the day pretending I was in the sequel to keep my hopes up. And, when I got home, there was a newsletter from the offline Power Ranger fan club with movie posters to order--how convenient. Get the kid while the movie is still fresh in his mind! Well, one of the posters looks exactly like the one that people got free from The Pagemaster on opening day (A girl at school gave me it.) The only difference is that poster is small but I think it's the same thing. Should I order it or not? Anyway, Paul Freeman was suuuucccchhhh a good actor. Not once did I think, "He's a good actor," but I kept thinking "Ooze is invincible and mean! How will the Power Rangers ever stop him?" Well, Justin threw me off the trail when he told me the ending--he forgot to mention what happened next. And, I did like it when Fred said, "Fred Kelmen--Silver Ranger...[It has a nice ring to it.]...Fred Kelmen-Gold Ranger." Man, that is soooo bad because if I ever submit this script to Saban Entertainment, they will think I got the idea from the movie. :( Speaking of Fred, I should have gotten that part. We look A LOT alike, except I know how to use a comb and I don't have all those gross freckles and pimples all over my face. Plus, my voice is higher and Jamie Croft's voice is softer. And, if I tried out for the part, I would be a lot more perky and dramatic--I'm not sure if that is a plus or a minus (?). Annnnyyyywwwaayyyy, I loved it soooooooo much! My mom did too and I had to drag her to the movie. I like how some of the shots make you feel like you're moving. Like, the skydiving shot or the zord shots, etc. It's soooo coool! Well, it was sooo cool to see Bryan Spicer, Shuki Levy, Mighty Raw, Aaron Waters, and Ron Wasserman on the credits. EVERYBODY LEFT BEFORE THE ENDING WHERE RITA AND ZEDD GET OUT OF THE SNOW GLOBE! The cleaning guys came in and my mom and I were still in there. I was nervous, but we managed to stay for the whole credits to hear "Trouble," "Kung Fu Dancing," and "Ayeyaiyai [Alpha Song]." Where was "Cross My Line?" I know it was instrumental but I couldn't tell. Ron, do you [or does anybody else] know what scene it is in? [Ron informed that it was in the carnival scene after I finished the review.] You know what's weird, at the beginning of the movie they have power suit type costumes. The new ones looked worse than the first ones (They did not have eyepieces and stuff.) Their supposedly old suits were exactly like the supposedly new ones. And, when did they supposedly get the Stega Stinger and such? And, does the 3rd season go back to Spandex? And, what about the head in the morpher scenes? FAVE QUOTES: IVAN OOZE-"Ah, there goes the cute Pink Ranger." GOLDAR-"So, you think she's cute, too?" (Instead of getting jealous at Goldar--which I did--I grinned and bared it.) DULCEA-"Adam, you are--Adam, what's the matter?" ADAM-"I'm a frog." * * * * * * * * * * ADAM-"Ah, pick on the frogface, huh?" * * * * * * * * * * ADAM-"Welcome to Jurassic Park." * * * * * * * * * * TENGU WARRIORS-"Should we take another whack at it?" OOZE-"How 'bout taking another quack at it?" * * * * * * * * * * BILLY-"You ooze, you lose." * * * * * * * * * * GOLDAR-"Do the swim." How does Goldar know what the swim is??? * * * * * * * * * * NINJA FROG ZORD-"Ribbit." * * * * * * * * * * KIMBERLY-"Tommy, get your butt down here!" * * * * * * * * * * KIMBERLY-"Listen, you Raisin Head. I don't think you know who you're dealing with." TOMMY-"We're the Power Rangers!" OOZE-"Ooh, where's my autograph book?" (We all saw it on the preview and it's old, but the audience liked it.) * * * * * * * * * * MORDANT-"I can't forget. I never knew." * * * * * * * * * * OOZE-"I'm the Booger Man." (Or, something like that. I thought he said I'm the Boogedy Man but I didn't think kids would laugh at that.) * * * * * * * * * * RITA/ZEDD-"Go Power Rangers! Go Power Rangers!" (Kind of ironic, huh? =:) ) BTW, if anyone stayed for the credits (We're not supposed to at the theater I went to) you would see at the VERY end it says, "Visit them at World Wide Web at http://www.thx.com. They were referring Thimax or something, which is the production company or something. I went and it said NOTHING about Power Rangers. Did anybody notice there was no AG Gym and Juice Bar, but there was a restaurant called Ernie's? I'm like, Weird--well, if it's called Ernie's, where's the Ernie??? I heard that he would be in the movie. And, where was "You garlic-sucking dingle brain!" Next time you see the movie, look on the left when Hornitor or whatever is crushing cars down along Angel Grove--there is a man getting out of a future crushed car, and he gets out with a woman. That is Bryan Spicer and his wife! I don't get something--if all the adults were under Ooze's spell, then how could there be adults running from him in the streets. If you have a review of a favorite quote to add, e-mail me! And, if you haven't seen the movie, WHAT THE #@! % ARE YOU DOING SITTING HOME AND READING A NEWSLETTER??? The Scifi Power Ranger board has moved! It's under Current Television Shows instead of Television! Just thought you'd like to know. By the way, some new Power Ranger members from the Internet say that this nl should only be out once a week, that I need to learn to tell all my sources, and that you guys are AFRAID to send in trivia, polls, and quiz answers! Oh my gosh...please tell me what YOU think of the nl! Remember, be nice :)... Sometime later--I don't know when: there will be info. on Sentai, including a list of all the Sentai shows, there will be info. on where the original cast members are now (updated), Thuy's new TV show, Amy Jo on a game show when she was a young'un, how episodes are made, the guide to Power Rangers spoofs/take-offs/subtle references that have been seen...And, EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know--all from Terri Ann C.'s FAQ guide! :) If I forgot to mention somebody or something, e-mail and tell me. I've been out of paper and couldn't print out what I received so I might have forgotten something. Coming next time will be...a review by Chris7118, the interview with Steve Cardenas (It wasn't in today's nl due to lack of room.), the spotlight on Karan Ashley/Aisha Campbell, the date of the Power Ranger chat, and some other stuff, I guess. And, the Winner of the Power Ranger contest will be announced (Of course, it must be RedRng or XSENTAIX). But, both will get something...More quotes, more polls, more trivia, MORE MOVIE MADNESS! Ninjetti--the frog! "[Aw, man.] I'm a frog." Next time, I'm gonna be the aardvark! :) Marx Okman = Mm__) a.k.a. Bryan Hillman the Teal Ranger.
