Mack Hartford is the 18-year-old son of wealthy industrialist and adventurer, Andrew Hartford. Mack was originally a lonely figure who found himself with few friends thanks to the isolation caused by family wealth. Mack usually found solace in books of fiction, and enjoyed imagining what it would be like to live the life of an adventurer.

When Andrew Hartford began recruitment of his Overdrive team, Mack found himself once again being sent away. Mack's father cared for his son far too much to put his life at risk, and instructed Mack to not interfere. Realizing Operation Overdrive was his chance at an exciting life, as well as a chance to prove himself to the world, Mack persisted in following the Overdrive team, and eventually assuming the role of the Red Overdrive Ranger, which had originally been intended for his father.

His father, once again, forbid Mack from participating, and took the Overdrive Tracker from him, despite the fact that Mack had proved himself adept at handing the Ranger powers even though he had no prior training or genetic enhancement. Mack was able to retrieve the Tracker, and eventually convince his father that he could be trusted.

When Mack became part of the Overdrive team, he received genetic manipulation that provided him with super-human strength. Mack is an adventurous soul, and enjoys various sports, model-making, and anime. As the Red Ranger, Mack controls the Dump Driver and the Drill Driver Zords, as well as wielding the Drive Lance.
