Tommy was the latest Ranger to join the original team. He was 17 years old, and received his Green Ranger Power from Rita Repulsa, who recruited him to destroy the Rangers. Under Rita's control, the Green Ranger was able to penetrate the Command Center,  disable Zordon and infect Alpha with a virus. Alpha, however, was able to trap Green Ranger in a force field, which lead to the Rangers discovering his identity. When the Ranger knew who he was, the engaged him in battle, and destroyed his Sword of Evil, which broke the spell over Tommy. Saved by the Rangers, Zordon recruited Tommy as the sixth Ranger. He is a highly skilled Black-Belt in Karate, and is well liked by the rest of the group. 

Rita developed a scheme to reclaim her Ranger, which involved the Green Candle- a candle made of magic wax, which when touched, retains a persons energy. When the candle was completely burned, the Green Ranger powers would belong to Rita again. The Rangers tried to stop her, but couldn't stop the candle in time. To prevent Tommy being turned to the dark side, he gave up being a Ranger and passed his Coin on to Jason. 

Later, Rita succeeded in capturing all of the Rangers coins, and they were left with Tommy's powerless coins. Zordon asked Tommy to return, and infused his powerless coin with his own energy, allowing Tommy to regain control of the Power Coins. While he was back on the team, his powers were weakened. He could only fight in emergencies, and he couldn't power a new Thunderzord. Eventually, the Green Ranger powers were completely depleted, and Tommy left the team again- but it was not the last time he would be a Ranger.
